Persistent pressure on supermarket profit margins will
not abate as the industry becomes more global and will
spill pressure onto food companies, said Allan S. Noddle,

of Kansas City for a study of
the use of perennial wheat in
breeding resistance to unfavorable conditions into varieties
of winter wheat in Kansas.
Harold A. Merrill, independent Board of Trade operator,
has been named manager of
the Moore-Seaver Grain Co.,
Kansas City, for the purpose
of liquidating the business.
An investigation by Congress
was asked March 31 by the
National Association of Commodity Exchanges and Allied
Trades, Inc. on the causes of
the extreme fluctuations in
grain prices and the great
advances in prices.

throughout Great Britain on the

fact that the recent dinner of
the National Association of the
British and Irish Millers was a
"breadless" affair. The president of the association, Donald
B. King, and the vice-president,
Wilfred D. Vernon, both commented in their addresses on
the absence of bread, and Mr.
Vernon noted that the British
minister of food had "outJosephed Joseph."
The Quaker Oats Co. plans
to proceed immediately on a
construction program on its
property in Portland, Ore.,
that will eventually include a
complete flour milling unit, a
rolled oats plant, mixed feed
manufacturing division and
packaged cereal unit. Plans
call for the expenditure of approximately $1,000,000.
In The House of Commons
recently, a member asked
John Strachey, the minister
of food, if he is aware that
several flour mills in Great
Britain were destroyed by
enemy action. He replied that
about 15% of the country's
flour milling capacity was
destroyed during the war.
That the Pure Oil Co. should
censure severely H.V. Kaltenborn of the National Broadcasting Co. for his unwarranted maligning of the grain
business through a radio
broadcast of March 26 was asserted in a letter sent to H.M.
Dawes, president of the at
