Ralston Purina Co. and
Piedmont Airlines have announced a joint "Kids Fly
Free" promotion in which
children aged 2 through
17 years can receive a free
round-trip airplane ticket
on any domestic Piedmont
flight. By redeeming five
proof-of-purchase seals from
boxes of Chex, Cookie-Crisp,
Sun Flakes or Fruit Islands
brand cereals, children can
receive a certificate good for
a free ticket with each adultfare ticket purchased, provided they travel with that adult.
A.F. (Pete) Sloan, chairman of
Lance, Inc., has been elected
by the board of directors to
the additional post of president. The action follows the
death last month of C. Jackson Buchannan, who had
been president of Lance since
1985.
Negotiations with the European Community over the
long-running "pasta war"
with the U.S. remains stalemated, even though July 1

in a citrus compromise.
Pepperidge Farm, Inc. cleared
the first of two major hurdles
July 23 when the National
Conference on Weights and
Measures voted to approve
incorporation of 12-oz bread
as an allowable loaf size in
the National Bureau of Standards Handbook 130.
The Senate has completed
work on the Omnibus Trade
and Competitiveness Act of
1987, its version of sweeping
trade policy reform legislation that poses direct and indirect implications for milling
and baking as well as grain
companies.
Bunge Corp., New York, and
Carlin Foods Corp., Chicago,
have reached an agreement
in which Bunge will acquire
Carlin Foods.

In a special mid-year economic report transmitted
July 21 by President Truman
to Congress, a suggestion
was made that, in case the
grain supply conditions
become really serious on account of the adverse corn
crop start, it may become
necessary to inaugurate
steps for the conservation of

domestic supplies and that
"it also might be necessary
to work out some methods
of adjusting the amount and
kinds of grain used by processors."
It is notorious that the black
market in France and Italy is
rampant and not much can
be done about it... The Italian
minister of agriculture almost
solemnly declares that, to
prevent irregularities in the
matter of grain deliveries, "it
would be necessary to have
a policeman on every farm.
There is only one sure way to
make the grain flow freely:
take off price control. Italian
farmers are already agitating
for that."
The first woman student to
study milling industry at
Kansas State College is expected to enroll in the fall
term. She is Tamar Chajuss of
Tel Aviv, Palestine, where her
father is a mill owner.
Workers in three additional
Buffalo, N.Y., mills went on
strike over the weekend,
making five plants idle here
in the walkout that started
two weeks ago in the two
largest mills of Buffalo. About
87,000 cwts of daily milling
capacity are shut down by
the strike, while the two mills
still running have production
capacity of about 13,000 cwts
daily.
Mont L. Cambier of Atlanta,
vice-president of bakery flour
sales for the Southeastern
Division of General Mills,
Inc., died July 20 in a private
hospital following an illness
of several months.
Acquisition of the Cakemaster soft wheat flour brand,
together with the formulas
and sales agreements, was
announced by M.D. King,
president of the M.D. King
Milling Co., Pittsfield, Ill.
The purchase was made from
Fletcher Kelley & Co., Kansas
City, successor to the Boonville Mills Co., Boonville,
Mo., whose plant was destroyed by fire in 1943. MBN
