Campbell Soup eyes older children
as new demographic for snacking
CAMDEN, N.J. - Campbell Soup Co.
has a focused priority for fiscal 2018 when
it comes to the company's Global Biscuits
and Snacks division: Strengthen the core,
expand in faster-growing spaces, build
global brands and better leverage global
capabilities.
In a July 19 presentation during the
company's corporate analyst meeting,
Luca Mignini, senior vice-president and
president of Global Biscuits and Snacks,
discussed three areas in the company's
U.S. business where those priorities will
come into play: children snacking, adult
snacking and fresh bakery.
Mr. Mignini said Campbell Soup
intends to reach more consumers
more often with Goldfish by continuing to drive up the brand's health and

well-being status. Additionally, a major
focus this year is to expand Goldfish to
a new demographic - older children -
while continuing to strengthen the brand's
connection with millennials, he said.
"A key component of this strategy in
fiscal 2018 will be to expand the Goldfish
franchise to bigger kids," Mr. Mignini
said. "Through our consumer insight, we
know that as kids get older, they begin
to want intensely flavored chips. We also
know that moms don't feel as good about
giving their kids these type of snacks because of the ingredients, particularly artificial flavors and colors, and how those
snacks are made, generally fried. The
new Goldfish line we are planning will
solve both of these pain points for moms
and deliver our 'Real Food Philosophy.'"

Business

In the company's adult snacking portfolio, Campbell Soup continues to move
forward with a strategy that has generated both sales and share gains. Mr. Mignini said the company intends to continue
to support delivering authenticity within
its cookie portfolio.
"Introduced this spring, Farmhouse
is on track to be the biggest Pepperidge
Farm snack launched in more than a decade," he said.
Within the company's fresh bakery
business, Mr. Mignini identified three areas of focus for Campbell Soup.
"We plan to reestablish our sandwich
bread business by focusing on quality and
its premium positioning in the market," he
said. "Second, building on our recent improvement in Swirl bread, we will reengage
consumers with improved communication.
And finally, we maintain the momentum in
(brands of all) businesses by reminding consumer of their everyday uses." MBN

Judge dismisses labeling lawsuit
against General Mills
MINNEAPOLIS - A federal judge in the
U.S. District Court of Minnesota has dismissed a lawsuit against General Mills,
Inc. involving the Minneapolis-based
company's use of the term "natural" to
describe the oats in its granola bars.
The class-action lawsuit stemmed from
a complaint filed by a group of citizens in
August 2016 in which the group alleged
they were misled by General Mills' claim
that its Nature Valley granola bars were
"Made with 100% Natural Whole Grain
Oats." According to the complaint, the
claim was deceptive because "Nature
Valley products contain trace amounts
of the chemical glyphosate, an herbicide and desiccant, which is commonly
sprayed on oat crops to dry them."

Snyder's-Lance expanding
Baptista's Bakery in Wisconsin
MADISON, WIS. - Snyder's-Lance, Inc.
has unveiled plans to expand its Baptista's
Bakery L.L.C. facility in Franklin, Wis. The
$7.8 million expansion will include building renovations, as well as machinery and
equipment upgrades, and will create 125
additional jobs, according to the Wisconsin
Economic Development Corp. (WEDC).
The WEDC is supporting the project
by authorizing up to $300,000 in state income tax credits over the next three years.

"The company has experienced tremendous growth over the last five years
and has already doubled employment at
its Franklin facility," said Mark R. Hogan,
secretary and chief executive officer of the
WEDC, the state's lead economic development corporation. "Baptista's has already
invested more than $100 million in its facility, and we are pleased to assist the company in the next phase of its growth."
Baptista's Bakery was established

following the sale of Gardetto's Bakery
to General Mills, Inc. in August 1999.
Gardetto's had two facilities when it was
sold, one in Milwaukee and the Franklin
facility, which is a 135,000-square-foot
plant built in 1997 on 26 acres of land.
Ms. Gardetto named the company after
her grandfather, Baptiste Gardetto, and
her father, John Baptiste Gardetto.
Baptista's manufactures sheeted and extruded snack products. According to the
company, the products are baked, low-in-oil,
salty or sweet snacks made primarily from
potatoes, corn, rice, oats or wheat. Snyder'sLance acquired Baptista's in 2014. MBN
