Dry dairy products prices were
steady to weaker last week while cheese
prices rose. Butter prices declined from
19-month highs set a week earlier.
High-heat nonfat dry milk (N.D.M.)
prices were unchanged. Spot sales were
light, and demand was limited. Stocks
were tight with production geared to
meeting contractual obligations.
Low/medium-heat N.D.M. prices
were steady to weaker with inventories
adequate to heavy. Production decreased
as less milk was offered to processors due
to seasonally lower production and increased demand for fluid milk as schools
reopen. Spot sales were light. Good export interest from Mexico was noted.
June N.D.M. production was up 12%
from a year ago, and shipments were up
slightly, while June 30 stocks were up
29%, the U.S. Department of Agriculture
said in its latest Dairy Products report.
Dry whey prices were steady to weak.
Production eased in most areas, but inventories were heavy amid sluggish domestic and export demand.
Lactose prices were steady to weak.
Demand was good, and stocks were

tight for specific brands. Otherwise, buyers were taking a wait-and-see approach,
and stocks were available. Increased offers from Europe were noted.
The price of 34% whey protein concentrate (W.P.C.) was lowered 2c a lb with pressure on product that can be replaced with
other proteins. Some buyers asked processors to delay shipments, the U.S.D.A. said.
Good demand and tight supplies of specific
brands created a two-tiered market.
Dry buttermilk prices were unchanged
despite declining production, tight stocks
and good demand. Some processors in
the East were not offering product.
June 30 stocks of dry whey were up 12%
from a year ago; lactose was up 9%; and
dry buttermilk was down 25%. W.P.C. for
human use was up 4%, and W.P.C. for animal use was up 105%, the U.S.D.A. said.
Cheese production was slowing but
still was strong overall. Demand was
mixed but mostly seasonally light. Inventories were adequate to mostly heavy.
Butter churning remained active even
as some manufacturers sold cream instead of churning because of high cream
prices. Retail and food service demand
was strong, as was export interest. MBN
