Spring wheat harvest nearly completed,
winter wheat planting under way

orthern Plains producers made
excellent progress toward completing the 2017 spring wheat
and durum harvests during the week
ended Sept. 3. Meanwhile, the planting
of the 2018 hard red winter wheat crop
has begun.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture
indicated the spring wheat harvest in
the six key producing states as of Sept.
3 was 89% completed compared with
76% a week earlier, 90% a year ago and
78% as the recent five-year average for
the date.

North Dakota is the largest spring
wheat
producer, and the harvest there

was 85% completed compared with
74% as the average for the date. Combining was 97% completed in South Dakota (93% as the five-year average for
the date), 89% in Minnesota (84%), 93%
in Montana (76%), 88% in Idaho (83%)
and 88% in Washington (90%).
The North Dakota Wheat Commission stated in its Sept. 6 crop progress
report, "Limited precipitation and a return to warmer temperatures allowed
for a good week of spring wheat harCake Donut Ingredients
vest. While good for harvest, the weather conditions further stressed drought
stricken areas, including wildfires in
western Montana.
"The drier conditions allowed good
harvest progress in eastern growing
areas, where damp conditions had delayed harvest," the commission continued. "The Minnesota harvest is now
89% complete, up 25 percentage points
from last week. Weather conditions this
week should allow much of the remaining harvest to be completed."

harvests neared completion, producers
have begun to seed the 2018 hard red
winter wheat crop.

crop was being "dusted-in" with 97% of
the state's topsoil moisture rated short
to very short compared with 39% a year
ago. Ninety-one per cent of subsoil was
rated very short to short compared with
45% a year ago. The North Dakota winter wheat crop was 1% planted.
Nebraska winter wheat planting was
1% completed by Sept. 3 compared with
4% last year and 3% as the average for
the date. Wyoming winter wheat was
8% planted compared with 18% as the
average. Colorado winter wheat was
2% planted compared with 6% a year
ago and 5% as the average. Kansas winter wheat planting was 1% completed,
equal to both last year and the five-year
average for the date.
