General Mills seeks solutions for
hunger relief, sustainable agriculture
MINNEAPOLIS - General Mills, Inc.
has launched the General Mills Feeding Better Futures Scholars Program,
an initiative designed to encourage
youth to share their ideas on addressing hunger relief and sustainable agriculture. As part of the program, several young innovators will be selected
to present their solutions at the Aspen
Ideas Festival June 21-30 in Aspen,
Colo., with the opportunity to earn
up to $50,000 to further their program
and education.
"At General Mills, we're inspired
by the ingenuity of today's youth and
know that, while they have immeasurable ability to positively impact the
world, they don't always have the resources to support their potential," said

and chief executive officer of General

Better Futures to empower young innovators and encourage new perspectives on an ongoing global issue where
action is imperative."
To take part in the program, General
Mills is asking youth between the ages

of 13 and 21 to share a short video that
explains a solution or program they
have initiated that addresses issues in
hunger relief and/or sustainable agriculture. A panel of experts will then

IBIE changes, Chinese market
OVERLAND PARK, KAS. - The 2018
BEMA Summit will offer three education
sessions for attendees this year that address changes being made to the International Baking Industry Expo (IBIE), offer
insights on the Chinese baking market
and give a preview of BEMA-U's new
training platform. Taking place Feb. 23-25
in Chicago, the education sessions were
developed to cover key challenges facing
BEMA members.
The IBIE Exhibitor Insight session, being held on Sunday, Feb. 25, will outline
new bundled booth pricing at IBIE 2019,
online contracting, show floor attractions,

housing blocks and more. A team from
Freeman Expositions will discuss booth
trends and how to use virtual reality at
trade shows.
"There are a lot of positive changes at
the 2019 show for exhibitors," said Kerwin Brown, president and chief executive
officer, BEMA. "This session will help
you understand the changes and get you
ready for booth selection in March."
Growing Internationally: Best Practices in China, also on Sunday, will offer advice on establishing a business in
the country. Speakers from Euromonitor
will present an in-depth look at China's

U.S.D.A. Outlook Forum to focus
on 'roots of prosperity'
WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and U.S.D.A. chief
economist Robert Johansson are among
the participants scheduled to give keynote
remarks at the 2018 Agricultural Outlook
Forum set for Feb. 22-23 at the Crystal
Gateway Marriott hotel in Arlington, Va.
The theme of this year's forum is "The
Roots of Prosperity."
The distinguished speaker for this year's
forum is Akinwumi Adesina, Ph.D, president of the African Development Bank.
Dr. Adesina recently was named the 2017

prize winner from the five finalists.
The grand prize winner will receive
$50,000 as well as an opportunity for
mentorship with industry leaders and
the ability to share their idea at Aspen
Ideas Festival. The four runners-up will
receive $10,000 and the opportunity for
mentorship with industry leaders.
Submissions will be accepted through
March 5.
General Mills has been active in
hunger relief and sustainable agriculture through its General Mills Foundation. Other initiatives include the
foundation's partnership with the U.S.
Department of Agriculture's Natural
Resources Conservation Service to
restore and protect pollinator habitat
across U.S. farmland, as well as its
partnership with Feeding America,
the Global Foodbanking Network and

The summit also will feature several networking events that include a gala celebrating BEMA's 100th anniversary and BEMA's
Lifetime Achievement awards luncheon. A

of agriculture-related exhibits. Among
the concurrent track sessions and topics supporting this year's theme are international markets, trade and agricultural policies here and abroad for Brazil,
Sub-Saharan Africa, and China; rural
