F.D.A. extends Nutrition Facts
Label compliance for industry
WASHINGTON - Food and beverage manufacturers have more time
to comply with a new Nutrition Facts
Label after the Food and Drug Administration on May 3 finalized a rule to
extend deadlines.
Manufacturers with $10 million or
more in annual food sales now have
until Jan. 1, 2020, to come into compliance. The previous compliance date
was July 26 of this year. Manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales have until Jan. 1, 2021,
which compared to a previous compliance date of July 26, 2019.
"This extension on the Nutrition
Facts Label regulation will help ensure

that we provide the food industry
with guidance to help them modernize their Nutrition Facts labels and
that industry has sufficient time to
complete and print updated Nutrition Facts labels," said

we provide clear expectations so that industry
can meet them. It's just as important
for consumers to be able to effectively use the updated food labels, and

Dr. Oetker to add frozen pizza
production line in Ontario
LONDON, ONT. - Dr. Oetker Canada Ltd., a subsidiary of Oetker Group,
has received an investment through
Ontario's Jobs and Prosperity Fund
that will allow the company to add a
high-speed frozen pizza manufacturing line in London. The addition of
the line will create 103 jobs and retain
115 positions at the plant.
The announcement comes nearly
three months after Dr. Oetker said
it would close its pizza manufacturing facility in Grand Falls, N.B.,
by the end of May. At the time of
that announcement, Dr. Oetker indicated that about 70% of the production at the Grand Falls facility
would be transitioned to London,
with the remaining 30% being

transitioned to its Lodi, N.J., plant.
As part of the latest investment,
Dr. Oetker will add a new production
line featuring dough preparation,
baking, toppings, freezing and packaging equipment. The line also will
use high-speed press technology to
manufacture single-serve and familysize pizzas. The overall production
rate of the London facility is expected
to nearly double, to 18,000 pizzas per
hour from 10,000.
"Our government's investment in
Dr. Oetker Canada Ltd. will help secure a C$54.5 million foreign direct
investment in Ontario's food processing sector and position the plant
to compete globally," said Jeff Leal,

KANSAS CITY - Changes are coming to Hostess Brands, L.L.C.'s Mini
Muffins lineup, including new products, new recipes and new packaging.
Joining the portfolio are new Hostess Mini Brownies with chocolate
chips. The peanut-free bite-size treats
are made with chocolate, contain no
trans fat, artificial colors or high-fructose corn syrup, and come in on-thego pouches of four brownies.
The Hostess Mini Muffins line
also is getting a complete makeover.

The F.D.A. in the May 27, 2016, issue of the Federal Register published
its final rule on changes to the Nutrition Facts Label and gave the original
compliance date. Some of the changes
included a larger type size for calories,
a mandatory declaration of added
sugars, and a mandatory
listing of vitamin D and
potassium.
The F.D.A. in September 2017 proposed to
extend the compliance
dates to Jan. 1, 2020, for manufacturers
with $10 million or more in annual food
sales and to Jan. 1, 2021, for manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual
food sales. The F.D.A. on May 3 of this
year finalized that proposed rule. MBN

The London facility was opened in
2014. Dr. Oetker makes pizzas under
the Ristorante, Casa di Mama and
Giuseppe brands. The company also
distributes a variety of dessert mixes

Now available in grocery stores nationwide, the new Hostess Mini Muffins and Mini Brownies are all peanutfree and baked in the United States.
