MacKie to join board of directors
of manufacturers association
WASHINGTON - Robb MacKie,
president and chief executive officer
of the American Bakers Association,
has been named to the board of the
National Association of Manufacturers' Council of Manufacturing Associations (C.M.A.).
Made up of more than 260 industry-specific manufacturing
associations, the C.M.A. is considered a vital arm of the NAM.
"One of the core values MacKie
A.B.A. brings to its members is
being heavily involved with esteemed
and well-aligned organizations such
as NAM-C.M.A.," Mr. MacKie said
"The opportunity to help guide this

organization and tell the story of manufacturing through the baking industry lens is tremendous."
The C.M.A.'s mission is focused on
bolstering the industry's nationwide grassroots mobilization
efforts and improving the competitiveness of manufacturers in
the United States. The association's members work with the
NAM to unite the manufacturing association community, and
ultimately the broader business
community, around strategies for increased manufacturing job creation,
investment and innovation in America.

thanks to policy wins that our industry
secured from leaders in Washington
and our efforts to advance the pillars
that keep our country exceptional: free
enterprise, competitiveness, individual

Other members joining the C.M.A.
board in 2019 include Geoff Freeman,
president and c.e.o. of the Grocery
Manufacturers Association, and Katherine Lugar, president and c.e.o. of the

BEMA Summit to feature
interactive sessions for bakers
OVERLAND PARK, KAS. - This year's
BEMA Summit will include more opportunities for bakers and equipment
manufacturers to interact and gain a better understanding of trends affecting the
industry. Held Feb. 23-24 in Chicago, the
event's three sessions will highlight best
practices and lean manufacturing strategies.
On Saturday, Feb. 23, attendees may attend a town hall-style discussion presented by the Baking Industry Forum (BIF).
Topics such as food safety, human safety
and operational efficiency will be covered
during the conversation led by BIF members Brandon Heiser, Roskam Baking;

Mario Somoza, Pan Pepin; Nelson Boyd,
Bimbo Bakeries USA; and Karl Thorson,
General Mills, Inc.
The following morning, a
Breakfast with Bakers session
will provide an interactive forum to explore new ideas and
solutions. Joe Turano, Turano
Baking Co.; Chad Larson, Palermo Villa; Tim Ramsey, Hearthside Food Solutions; Brian Dwyer,
Kroger; and Greg Boyd, Flowers Foods,
will be taking questions during the event.

Ag Outlook plenary session to
highlight precision biotechnology
WASHINGTON - Sara Wyant, president
of Agri-Pulse, will moderate the "Evolving Regulatory Landscape and Adoption
of Precision Biotechnology Crop and Livestock Innovations" plenary session set for
Feb. 21 in Arlington, Va. The session is part
of the 2019 Agricultural Outlook Forum,
which will be held Feb. 21-22 at the Crystal
Gateway Marriott hotel in Arlington.
The plenary session will feature a panel
discussion on precision biotechnology in
agriculture and the role of regulations. Participants on the panel include: Governor
Pete Ricketts of Nebraska; Barbara Glenn,
chief executive officer of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture; Tammy Lee, c.e.o. of Recombinetics;

and Jack Bobo, senior vice-president and
chief communications officer of Intrexon.
The theme of the 2019 forum is "Growing
locally, selling globally." The opening plenary session also will feature keynote remarks
from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny
Perdue, welcoming comments from Deputy
Secretary Steve Censky, and "The 2019 Economic Outlook for Agriculture" presented
by Robert Johansson, chief economist at the
U.S. Department of Agriculture.
"U.S.D.A. is committed to supporting
technology and innovations that benefit
U.S. farmers," Mr. Perdue said. "The forum offers a unique platform to discuss
these issues and why they matter to the
agricultural sector, industry leaders,

Twitter and Facebook and to include the
hashtag #AskABaker2019 with their submissions.
That same day, Mr. Boyd of Bimbo Bakeries USA will lead a conversation on lean
manufacturing practices at the BEMA-U
in the Workplace session. In addition,
BEMA member companies LeMatic and JLS Automation, along
with the National Association of
Manufacturers, will share best
practices for attracting, retaining
and training employees.
The BEMA Summit kicks off the
"Best Week in Baking" and is held
prior to the American Society of Baking's
BakingTech in Chicago. Registration for
the summit is still open. Bakers can attend free of charge using the code "bsummit19." MBN

In addition to the plenary session, the
forum will feature 30 sessions with more
than 90 speakers and a range of agriculture-related exhibits. Among the concurrent track sessions and topics supporting
this year's theme are: global trade trends,
innovations in agriculture, developments
in animal and crop biotechnology, frontiers in conservation and outlooks for
food and commodity markets.
The Agricultural Outlook Forum is the
U.S.D.A.'s largest annual meeting, attracting as many as 2,000 attendees from
the United States and abroad. The forum
highlights key issues and timely topics
affecting the agriculture sector, offering a
platform for exchanging information and
ideas among producers, processors, policymakers, government officials and nongovernmental organizations. MBN
