Aldi E. coli threat once again
prompts recall of family flour

BATAVIA, ILL. - Aldi on May 22 announced it has recalled Baker's Corner All Purpose Flour sold at retail
locations in the northeastern United
States, citing the potential presence of
E. coli. The affected product is sold in
a 5-lb bag with a "best if used by date"
of Dec. 2, 2019.
Aldi said the product was sourced
from an ADM Milling Co. flour mill in
Buffalo, N.Y., and was distributed to
select Aldi stores in 11 states: Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, New Jersey, New York,
Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
Vermont and West Virginia.
According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, 17 people
have been infected with the outbreak
strain of E. coli O26, with illnesses
noted as early as Dec. 11, 2018, and as
late as April 18, 2019. There have been

interviewed reported "eating, licking,
or tasting raw, homemade dough or

Ardent Mills adding specialty
grains capabilities at Denver mill
DENVER - Ardent Mills is introducing
new capabilities at its Denver mill. In addition to flour milling, the company will clean
and pack intact grains, pearl barley and dehull heirloom grains like emmer, einkorn
and spelt, the Denver-based company said
May 22. More farmers are seeking to bring
these grains to market, according to Ardent
Mills, and the company is seeing increasing
demand from its customers in segments
such as artisan baking, brewing and distilling, food service, and retail foods.
The mill, which is in the River North
Art District (RiNo) of Denver, will produce and clean organic and non-bioengineered/non-G.M.O. grains and sell them

nationwide in 25-lb and 50-lb bags and
totes. With 5,000 cwts of daily milling
capacity, the facility is the smaller of two
flour mills Ardent Mills operates in the

Denver area. The second, located in Commerce City, has 20,000 cwts of daily milling capacity and includes family flour
packaging, bakery mix manufacturing
and a specialty mill that produces baker's
brand and mills whole wheat flour.

Pretzels, Inc. to add production,
packaging capacity in Indiana plant
PLYMOUTH, IND. - Pretzels, Inc., a portfolio company of private equity firm Peak
Rock Capital, has announced plans to expand its manufacturing facility in Plymouth.
As part of the project, Pretzels said it will
add more than 120,000 square feet to its existing Plymouth plant, creating space for
additional production and packaging lines.
The expansion will increase efficiencies
with existing operations. The additional capacity is expected to be operational by the
second quarter of 2020, Pretzels said.

The C.D.C. said its investigation remains "ongoing," and the Food and
Drug Administration is working to determine whether other brands or lots
of flour may be potentially contaminated and need to be recalled.
"Aldi takes the safety and integrity of
the products it sells seriously," the company said. "If customers have product
affected by this voluntary recall, they
should discard it immediately or return
it to their local store for a full refund."
Aldi directed consumers with additional questions to contact ADM Milling Co.
Earlier this year Hometown Food
Co. recalled a limited lot of 5-lb bags
of Pillsbury Unbleached All Purpose
Flour due to possible contamination
with Salmonella. General Mills, Inc.
also this year recalled 5-lb bags of
Gold Medal Unbleached Flour after
Salmonella was detected during the

salty snack products, including traditional, peanut butter-filled, flavored, seasonal and gluten-free pretzels, as well as
