Cash Wheat
HARD WINTER. Premiums on hard
red winter wheat in Kansas City were
unchanged to 24c a bu higher last week.
The widest gains were posted across
the top half of the protein scale largely
in response to the surging cash hard red
spring wheat premiums.
Indications were that for some mills
front-end congestion began to ease toward the week's end, and these sought
to "dip a toe back in the water" with an
eye toward keeping pipelines full knowing offers would lighten as fall crop harvest kicks into higher gear.
At the same time, other mills continued to have filled pipelines. Congestion
resulted in a rail embargo of the General
Mills facility in Kansas City, the Union
Pacific web site indicated. A merchandiser noted the embargo was a culmination
of lengthy service delays that first resulted in excess cars at origins followed by
too many cars at destinations.
Business in to-arrive wheat was light
with the spread between bids and offers
too wide for most to bridge the span.
In its weekly Crop Progress report, the
U.S. Department of Agriculture issued its
first composite winter wheat planting estimate of the season. The U.S.D.A. indicated
winter wheat planting by Sept. 15 was 6%
completed in Kansas (6% as the recent fiveyear average for the date), 7% in Oklahoma
(10%), 4% in Texas (10%), 21% in Colorado
(25%), 19% in Nebraska (26%), 5% in Montana (16%) and 5% in South Dakota (22%).
The U.S.D.A. indicated as planting got
underway in Kansas, that state's topsoil
moisture was 5% surplus, 71% adequate,
19% short and 5% very short. Topsoil moisture was in good shape in Nebraska (90%
surplus to adequate), but fared worse in
other hard red winter wheat states. Surplusto-adequate topsoil ratings were 17% in Texas, 61% in Oklahoma and 56% in Colorado.

HARD SPRING. Premiums on hard
red spring wheat in Minneapolis surged
last week, up 60@70c from a week earlier. Wheat receipts in Minneapolis were
piddling, amounting to only 40 rail cars
through Thursday.
The U.S.D.A. indicated the spring
wheat crop in the six principal producing states was 76% harvested by Sept. 15
compared with 96% a year earlier and
93% as 2014-18 average for date. Combining was 73% completed in North Dakota (91% as the average), 96% in South
Dakota (98%), 83% in Minnesota (95%),
69% in Montana (91%), 89% in Idaho
(97%) and 87% in Washington (98%).
Excessive rain up to six times the normal September amount in some areas
raised wheat quality concerns, especially
falling number in all regions of North Dakota. "Now we are getting some visible
sprout in fields, too," said Jim Peterson
of the North Dakota Wheat Commission. "At some locations, they (elevators)
have gone to a one-price bid on wheat,
whether it's $2.50 or $3 a bu, for anything
that's non-milling, rather than employing
a graduated discount scale," he said.

over March. Toledo mill bids for September were 25c over Chicago Dec.; OctoberDecember, 45c over Dec. Elevator bids for
nearby were 18c over Chicago Dec. The
Cincinnati elevator bid was 15c under Chicago Dec. Michigan white wheat mill bids
were 40c over Chicago Dec.; soft red winter wheat mill bids were 20@25c over Dec.
Gulf bids on soft red winter wheat for nearby were 70c over Chicago Dec. unchanged.
Emergency repairs to a key navigational lock were underway at Columbia
River's Bonneville Dam in the Pacific
Northwest with a projected reopening of
Sept. 30. Meanwhile, export wheat could
not move to ports.
The U.S.D.A. indicated winter wheat
planting by Sept. 15 was 1% completed
in Ohio and Arkansas (0% a year ago and
as the average for each), 3% in Michigan
(3% year ago and as average), 14% in Oregon (9% year ago, 8% average) and 30%
in Washington (44% and 42%). MBN

that based on 312 of an intended 445 samples, the 2019 hard red spring wheat crop
was averaging 14.6% protein (14.6% as
2018 crop average), 60.3 lbs per bus in test
weight (61.7 lbs), 34.1 grams in thousand
kernel weight (32 grams), 382 seconds in
falling number (414 seconds) and 65% dark
vitreous kernels (90%). The average grade
was No. 1 northern spring wheat compared
with No. 1 dark northern spring in 2018.
