Snyder 's of Hanover has announced plans to acquire Utz
Quality Foods, Inc., a privately-held maker of potato
chips, pretzels, tortilla chips,
popcorn, pork rinds and other snacks with distribution
primarily on the East coast.

Flowers Foods, Inc. has acquired Leo's Foods, Inc., a
family-owned tortilla manufacturer with one facility in
Fort Worth, Texas.

of the assets of Ruth Ashbrook
Bakeries Corp. of Seattle.

The Tradigrain group of companies will be acquired by
BP Nutrition, according to an
agreement in principle.
ConAgra, Inc. and Westglen
Milling Corp. have signed a
letter of intent under which
the two companies will form
a joint venture called Westglen Milling Ltd. The joint
venture company will build a
new oat and barley processing mill near Barrhead, Alta.
Richard F. Uhlmann, former
Chicago grain and trade executive, died Oct. 9 at a Chicago
area hospital after a brief illness. He was 91 years old.
The majority of outstanding
shares of Vie de France Corp.
will continue to be controlled
by Jean-Louis Vilgrain, his
family and a related group
under an agreement reached
with Bouygues S.A., the construction company that recently acquired a controlling
interest in Vie de France's
parent company - Grands
Moulins de Paris.

generation of
his family in the
company, was
elected treasurer
at a meeting of
Rowley Miller
the board of directors in Minneapolis Oct. 20.
Noting that the restaurant
industry is the second largest
customer of the baking industry, "a potential $200,000,000
customer," Andrew J. Crotty
Jr., president of the National
Restaurant Association, told
the annual luncheon meeting
of the Allied Trades of the
Baking Industry Oct. 18 that
a survey should be made to
determine restaurant preferences for baked foods.

flour, imported white flour,
rye flour and cake flour were
flown into Berlin on the airlift
in its year of operations from
May 1948 through May 1949,
according to a review of the
"Food Aspects of the Berlin
Airlift," published in Foreign
Agriculture.

annual convention of the organization Oct. 28.
John L. Locke, president and
general manager of the Fisher
Flouring Mills Co., Seattle, has
offered a proposal to increase
exports of wheat flour from the
United States to Japan through
a lowering of extraction rate
in that country. Noting that
the present rate of extraction
in Japan is 94%, Mr. Locke
proposes that this be lowered
to 72%, "giving the people of
