Dry dairy product prices last week
were mixed in quiet trading, butter prices
fell, and cheese values mostly declined.
The spread of the coronavirus in China
and the related extension of the Lunar
New Year limited export interest from
Asia. Prices of some products on global
markets eased, but U.S. dairy product
prices so far did not appear to be affected.
Dairy product production in December
mostly was up from a year earlier, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture said. Nonfat
dry milk (N.D.M.) outturn was up 15%
from December 2018, dry whey was up 7%,
butter was up 4%, and cheese was up 0.2%.
The only declines were lactose, down 15%,
and whey protein concentrate, down 2.2%.
High-heat N.D.M. prices were weak,
and low/medium-heat values declined
1c to 2c a lb. High-heat production was
intermittent but adequate to meet contractual needs amid limited spot demand. Low/medium production was
active, and inventories were building
amid a slowdown in spot sales, except to
bakers, who showed fair to good buying
interest. December N.D.M. shipments
were down 27% from a year ago, but

Dec. 31 stocks still declined 10%.
Prices of dry buttermilk, dry whey and
34% whey protein concentrate all were
raised 1c a lb, with lactose unchanged. Requests from dry mix manufacturers and
bakers were "robust" for dry buttermilk
in the West, the U.S.D.A. said, but overall,
trading was slow, and stocks were tight.
Dry whey production and 34% W.P.C. production were steady to higher, and supplies were available but not burdensome.
Cheese production was active as milk
offers were above expectations in some
areas with the spring peak milk production period still weeks away. Stocks were
building, and prices mostly were lower.
Retail demand was about steady.
CME Group butter prices fell to fresh
three-year lows. Churning was active,
and stocks were building while imports
remained strong. There was some hope
from an expected boost in demand ahead
of Easter and Passover, and some buyers
were adding coverage into the third quarter to take advantage of the low prices.
The milk replacement heifer inventory
on Jan. 1 was 4,637,000 head, down 1.4%
from a year earlier, the U.S.D.A. said in
its annual Cattle report. MBN
