Flowers, Kellogg among companies
adding supply management plans
KANSAS CITY - As concerns about
the coronavirus (COVID-19) continue
to spread, consumers in the United
States have flocked to grocery stores
and retail outlets to load up on staples
in the event that restrictions worsen.
The shift in buying patterns has been
good news/bad news for many of
the nation's largest baking and grainbased foods companies, who have
been left to fill empty store shelves
while dealing with their own "social
distancing" initiatives.
Flowers Foods, Inc., Thomasville,
Ga., said the increased market demand for fresh baked products such
as bread, buns and rolls has prompted
the company to adjust its production schedule at some of its 46 baking
plants across the United States. The
company now is focused on providing
a core group of products to retailers
through its network of independent
distributors.
"We will continue to monitor the
situation and take the necessary steps

to meet this unprecedented market demand for fresh baked products," the
company said.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Bimbo
Bakeries USA, Horsham, Pa., said "every
aspect" of BBU is "open for business."
