Egg Products
Liquid egg prices that plunged to record
lows in late April nearly doubled last week
and were up 150% to 180% in the past two
weeks. Price gains mostly were attributed
to renewed buying interest, albeit modest,
from the foodservice sector.
"There's been a little bit of an awakening," one Midwest egg processor said.
"Users who have been silent the last four
to eight weeks are starting to place orders. Processors aren't so desperate to sell
whole egg." As a result, some processors
who had reduced hours were resuming
regular 40-hour schedules.
Liquid whole egg prices plunged 80%
from March 20 to April 24, pulling frozen
whole egg down 60% and dried whole
down a modest 7% during the same time.
Liquid whole egg typically is the first to
respond to changes in egg prices, which
soared to record highs at the onset of the
shelter-at-home period when consumers
cleaned out grocery shelves only to plunge
when supplies became readily available at
the same time as buying slowed. Excess retail eggs then were channeled to breakers,
resulting in excess liquid about the same
time as the foodservice business dried up.

A combination of reduced egg supplies, in part due to flock culling, and
increased demand as restaurants gradually reopen provided a boost to the
whole egg product market. Egg prices
also moved higher.
Trade sources noted that the increase
in foodservice demand was quite modest, but also quite evident. At the same
time, retail sales have continued to slow
due in part to purchase limits implemented by retailers. MBN

Cocoa
Cocoa powder prices were unchanged
in steady but quiet trading last week. As
with other markets, cocoa, chocolate in
particular, faces uncertain demand because
of the coronavirus. After nearly flat global
cocoa bean grind in the first quarter, many
expected demand erosion because of shelter-at-home rules during the pandemic.
New York cocoa bean futures were
lower with May going off the board May
13 at $2,474 per tonne.
Cocoa bean arrivals for export at Ivory
Coast ports totaled 1.784 million tonnes
from Oct. 1 to May 10, down 5.7% from
a year earlier, according to exporters. MBN
