The 2010 Dietary Guidelines
for Americans again recommend six servings of grains
per day, unchanged from the
2005 guidelines, a decision that
generally pleased leaders of
the grain-based foods industry.
The board of directors of Sara
Lee Corp. has agreed to divide
the company into two separate,
publicly traded companies. Under the plan, Sara Lee's North
American retail and North
American foodservice businesses will be spun off into a new
public company that will continue to use the Sara Lee name.
The other company will include
Sara Lee's current international
beverage and bakery business
as well as the North American
beverage businesses.

LLC has announced plans to
expand its baking facility in
Michigan City, Ind.
A class action lawsuit calls
into question the filling the
fast-food franchise Taco Bell
uses in its tacos.
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. plans to
reduce the amount of sodium,

The Hain Celestial Group,
Inc. has acquired CG UniqueFiber AS, a manufacturer of
all-natural high-fiber crackers in Norway with branded

Pillsbury Brands, part of Grand
Metropolitan P.L.C. of the
United Kingdom, on Jan. 28
announced it had reached a definitive agreement with Cargill
to sell four of Pillsbury's eight
wheat flour mills for approximately $100 million. Under the
agreement, Pillsbury would sell
its flour mills at Springfield, Ill.;
Los Angeles; Lake City, Minn.;
and Ogden Utah.
President Bush has nominated
representative Edward R.
Madigan of Illinois, the ranking Republican member of the
House Agriculture Committee,
to succeed Clayton Yeutter as
Secretary of Agriculture.

Heinz F. Hutter has been
elected president and William
R. Pearce vice-chairman of
Cargill, the company's board
of directors announced Feb. 4.
In a continuing restructuring
of the U.S. cookie and cracker
business, Sunshine Biscuits,
Inc., a subsidiary of G.F.
Industries, Inc., Oakland,
Calif., purchased the former
Salerno-Megowen Biscuit Co.
at Niles, Ill., from General
Biscuit of America, Inc.

Culinar Inc., which last month
announced acquisition of
Drake Bakeries, Inc., Wayne,
N.J., plans to close Drake's
bread and cake plant at Long
Island City, N.Y., on Dec. 31.
James R. Spicola, 60, president and chief
operating officer of Cargill
since 1984 and
a major force
in the development of the
company's
Spicola
worldwide
oilseed processing business,
died Jan. 29.
After a 35-year career in
wheat quality
improvement
work, Thomas
C. Roberts,
executive vicepresident of the
Wheat Quality
Council, later
Roberts
this month will
formally announce his retirement from the post.

Stabilization Agency for
clarification of its mandatory
blanket order, issued Jan. 26,
freezing prices and wages.
Two sons and one daughter of
milling executives graduated
from the Department of Milling Industry of Kansas State
College Jan. 26. The sons were
Richard A. Hilts, son of Glenn
F. Hilts, vice-president and
director of southwest operations of the Commander-Larabee Milling Co., Kansas City,
and Richard R. Walter, son of
Dewey E. Walter, Pillsbury
Mills, Inc., Kansas City. The
daughter was Tamara Chajuss,
whose father operates Aron
Chajuss, Ltd., a milling company in Tel Aviv, Israel. Miss
Chajuss, the first girl to graduate from the department, plans
to return to Tel Aviv.
After conferences with the
regional office of the Office of
Price Administration, a large
wholesale baker in New York
Feb. 1 agreed to rescind a 1c
advance in bread prices that
had been in effect since Jan. 26.

Culminating a proxy battle
between stockholders of the
Kansas Milling Co., Wichita,
a completely new board of
directors was elected at a
meeting of the shareholders of
the company held Jan. 23. The
new directorate elected Fred
F. Burns president and general
manager of the company.
The fact that bread is not
fattening and occupies an
important role in the reducing diet is winning the
acceptance of the nation's
magazines, newspaper food
columns and radio programs.
A prominent example is provided by the Jan. 30 issue of
Look magazine, now on newsstands, which stresses the importance of enriched bread in
an illustrated article, " Look
Slimmer ... Feel Better. "
