Egg Products
Demand for egg products, notably dried
egg yolk, remained strong last week. Breaking
egg prices weakened as demand and
prices at retail declined, pushing more supplies
into breaking channels.
Perhaps garnering more attention was
the requirement as of Jan. 1 that eggs and egg
products in California and Massachusetts
come from cage-free layers only. California
previously had requirements for cage sizes,
but now has moved completely to cage free.
Those on opposite sides of the chicken coup
traded claims about shortages, animal welfare
and higher prices.
There appeared to be no shortage of cagefree
eggs as producers geared to the point
of oversupply in the past couple of years
in anticipation of companies converting to
cage-free eggs by 2025. But that didn't mean
there weren't spot shortages of cage-free
eggs and especially of cage-free products
amid the transition in the two states, complicated
by logistics and COVID-19.

into a new norm, one processor
noted. At the same time,
he indicated that while he
produced some cage-free egg
products, he found the cost of
buying cage-free eggs to break
as too high to produce more.
Meanwhile, processors were
running full schedules to fill
post-holiday orders of conventional
egg products.
" For egg products, everybody
wants everything they can get their
hands on, " a Midwest processor said, noting
especially strong demand for dried yolk.
Dried egg product prices were unchanged,
but the processor said he expected dried
yolk prices to rise shortly due to high prices
for liquid yolk and higher production costs.
Frozen whole egg and yolk prices both were
raised 2¢ a lb, while frozen white and liquid
product prices were unchanged. MBN
Cocoa
Cocoa powder prices were unchanged last
week. Activity was quiet at the start of the
new year with attention on adding coverage
into 2023.
New York cocoa bean futures were lower
on ideas that any increase in global cocoa
demand will be limited by the strong occurrence
of the omicron variant of COVID-19
while cocoa bean production in West Africa
remains strong.
Cocoa bean arrivals at Ivory Coast ports
totaled 1.08 million tonnes from Oct. 1 to Jan.
2, down 4% from a year earlier, according to
