" One thing to also consider is the stability
from oxidation that some varieties
of sunflower oil provide, especially
the high-oleic sunflower oil, " he said.
" Replacing that with other conventional
oils can be a difficult task as more other
conventional vegetable oils are not as
stable and can oxidize at a higher rate.
It is key here to consider the relative
stabilities of the oils using a parameter
such as OSI (oil stability index) to compare
the products and when a boost to
stability is needed to match the sunflower
oil. Then there are numerous
antioxidants, synthetic and natural, that
are available. "
DOING PALM RIGHT
Surveys show consumer interest in
sustainability concerns like deforestation.
Ethical claims regarding the environment
reached 6.6% of total global food
and beverage launches in 2020-21, up
from 4.6% in 2016-17, according to Innova
Market Insights, Arnhem, The Netherlands.
The 2022 Food and Health Survey
from the International Food Information
Council, Washington, found 46% of
respondents said knowing that the food
was produced in an environmentally
sustainable way factored in to whether
they purchased the food or not.
Food companies wanting to source
more sustainable palm oil may check out
the Palm Done Right logo from Natural
Habitats, an organic and sustainable
palm business that launched in 2009.
" Since then, we have been connecting
with manufacturers in North America
and Europe that have been sourcing

and social standards, " said

and corporate communications director
at Natural Habitats/Palm Done Right.
" Yet, the mainstream media continued to
focus on all the destruction that conflict
palm oil was causing. While raising the
bar on our production standard, we also
realized we needed to show another
side to palm oil production. In 2016 we
launched Palm Done Right, a campaign,
movement and platform to change the
conversation around palm oil. Today the
Palm Done Right initiative is at the forefront
leading the organic and sustainable
palm industry. "
Natural Habitats, Boulder, Colo., works
with independent farmers in Ecuador,
she said. Palm Done Right focuses on
five areas: 100% organic practices, full
traceability from farm to fork, deforestation-free
supply chains, wildlife-friendly
" Palm Done Right is not a standard or
certification, " Ms. van Wijnbergen said.
" Yet there is a Palm Done Right logo that
a growing number of brand partners are
using on their consumer packaged goods
to show that they care about their palm
oil sourcing and for consumers to be able
to trust that the palm oil used to make
their product comes from organic and
sustainable sources. We are launching
a new 'Shop Smart, Save Sloths' logo to
make consumers aware that their product
choices impact wildlife habitats. "
The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm
Oil, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, does offer
RSPO certification. The not-for-profit
organization unites stakeholders from
seven sectors of the palm oil industry:
oil palm producers, palm processors
and traders, consumer goods manufacturers,
retailers, banks and investors,
environmental or nature conservation
non-governmental organizations. The
production, and practices that provide
economic benefits and social benefits to
growers, workers and communities in
areas where Palm Done Right operates.
Palm Done Right in June had 59 brand
partners, 7 business partners and 63
retail partners.
Natural Habitats through Palm Done
Right offers a guide called " Palm positive+,
a reference guide " to dispel health
myths, promote supply chain transparency
and educate consumers on palm oil.
The guide details the history of palm oil
and gives a timeline on sustainability
within the industry.
RSPO seeks to develop and implement
global standards for sustainable palm oil
production.
Columbus Vegetable Oils is a member
of the RSPO as well as the Rainforest Alliance,
Mr. Cummisford said.
AAK is a s a founding member of the
RSPO. The company in 2021 increased its
verified deforestation-free palm by 34%
and increased traceability to the plantation
by 16%. By the end of 2021 67% of
AAK's total palm oil volumes were deforestation-free
and 81% were traceable to
