Cargill also is updating and expanding
canola facilities in Camrose, Alta.,
and Clavet, Sask., said Roger Watchorn,
group leader, Cargill agricultural supply
chain for North America. Those improvements,
which will be made over the next
12 months, will increase volume and
broaden capabilities at both locations.
Soybean oil, Decatur, was trading at
75.50¢ per lb on July 2, more than double
the price of 28.50¢ a year ago.
Chicago-based ADM in May announced
plans to build a soybean crushing plant
and refinery in Spiritwood, ND, to meet
demand for food, feed, industrial and
biofuel customers, including producers
of renewable diesel. The approximately
$350 million crush and refining complex,
which is expected to be completed before
the 2023 harvest, will feature automation
technology and have the capacity to process
150,000 bus of soybeans per day.
" ADM's commitment to preserving and
protecting our planet's resources stretches
from the farm gate to the food on our tables
and the renewable fuel we put in our vehicles, "
said Greg Morris, president of ADM's
Ag Services and Oilseeds business. " This
exciting new project allows us to partner
with North Dakota farmers to further
advance the role of agriculture in addressing
climate change through the production
of low carbon feedstocks for products such
as renewable diesel. "
NON-DEFORESTATION GOALS
Sustainability programs include soybean
growing regions in South America
and palm regions in Asia.
ADM in March released a new policy
to protect forests, biodiversity and communities.
The company by the end of 2022
expects to have full traceability of its direct
and indirect sourcing in its soy supply
chains in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.
The goal is to end native vegetation conversion
and reconcile production of soy with
environmental, economic and social interests
in high-risk areas such as the Cerrado
and Chao biomes in South America.
Bunge, St. Louis, included a non-deforestation
commitment in its 2021 global
sustainability report. The company
wants its supply chains, including soy in
South America and palm from Southeast

Administration promotes certain
fats as healthier than other fats, and popular
diets, including keto and paleo, allow for
higher doses of fat.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans
2020-2025 recommended less than 10%
of calories per day come from saturated
fats. Consumers should replace them with
unsaturated fats, particularly polyunsaturated
fats.
Respondents to the International Food
Information Council Foundation's 2021
Food and Health Survey had their own
views on fats. While more than 40% said
they were trying to limit or avoid saturated
fats, fewer than 10% said they were trying
to consume more saturated fats. The percentages
were much different for omega-3
fatty acids, with less than 10% saying
they were trying to limit or avoid them and
nearly 40% saying they were trying to
consume more of them.

marketing for ADM Oilseeds, a division of
Chicago-based ADM, pointed to an FMCG
Gurus report released this March that
showed 61% of global consumers are more
conscious about leading healthier lifestyles
than they were before the COVID-19
pandemic.
