Company Overview PepsiCo, Inc. Russian acquisition boosts international presence P epsiCo, Inc., Purchase, N.Y., in 2011 focused on international expansion through a Russian acquisition while domestically the company sought ways to improve beverage performance. PepsiCo in September completed its purchase of Russian food and beverage company Wimm-Bill-Dann Foods. The transaction, originally announced in December 2010, makes PepsiCo the largest food and beverage company in Russia. The deal also raises PepsiCo’s annual global revenues from nutritious and functional foods to nearly $13 billion from about $10 billion, and it moves the company closer to its strategic goal of building a $30 million nutrition business by 2020. “More than ever, any company’s growth is going to be defined to the extent to which they have a presence in developing and emerging markets,” said Indra Nooyi, chairman and chief executive officer of PepsiCo, on Feb. 24 at the Consumer Analyst Group of New York Conference. “And I believe this trend will continue into the future as developed markets’ growth rates slow down and developing and emerging markets pick up.” Over the past five years, PepsiCo’s emerging market exposure has increased by 10 points to 31% from 21%. PepsiCo, Inc. had total net revenues of $57,838 million in fiscal 2010. PepsiCo Europe accounted for 16% of the revenues while PepsiCo AMEA (Asia, Middle East & Africa) accounted for 12%. Other revenue contributions came from PepsiCo Americas Foods (37%) and PepsiCo Americas Beverages (35%). PepsiCo had net income of $3,049 million, or $1.89 per share, for the 24 weeks ended June 11, 2011, which was up from $3,047 million, or $1.87 per share, for the same time period in 2010. Operating and financial performance in North America Beverages was below expectations for the second quarter even though the Gatorade brand was strong and volume was up 40% for Trop50. “As we knew we would, we had exceptionally high levels of commodity inflation,” Ms. Nooyi said in an earnings conference call on July 21. “That said, it is the consumer and competitive picture that has become more difficult than we expected. Consumer category demand was lower than we anticipated because overall retail foot traffic and basket sizes have declined and the category pricing environment was tough. These factors led to lower-than-expected price realization and a delay in some of our planned pricing actions.” In the second quarter ended June 11, Indra Nooyi operating profit at PepsiCo Americas Beverages rose 3% to $983 million. Quaker Foods North America, which experienced a 10% drop in operating profit in fiscal year 2010, continued to rebound in 2011. Operating profit for the second quarter ended June 11 rose 6% to $167 million. Second-quarter operating profit for Frito-Lay North America also rose 6%, to $853 million. In December of 2010 the Frito-Lay North America division said about half its product portfolio will be made with natural ingredients, including three of its biggest brands in Lay’s potato chips, Tostitos tortilla chips and SunChips multigrain snacks. The products will contain no artificial flavors or artificial preservatives, or ingredients such as monosodium glutamate (MSG). CP F ast acts PepsiCo bought Russian food and beverage company Wimm-Bill-Dann Foods. Second-quarter performance in North America Beverages failed to meet expectations. Frito-Lay North America emphasizes natural ingredients. 110 \ October 2011 Milling & Baking News • Food Business News • Baking & Snack • Meat & Poultry Corporate Profiles
