closing a South Sioux City, Neb., bakery by October. The facility produces buns.
B.B.U. took a number of steps during the
year to boost demand. The company targeted
the growing single-person household demographic with the launch of Simply Small bread.
The bread line is available under the Arnold,
Brownberry and Oroweat brands and is packaged 10 slices per 14-oz bag.
Citing data from the U.S. Census Bureau,
B.B.U. said 28% of U.S. households are now
single-person households, making the demographic the fastest-growing household size in
the United States.
"We're hopeful that our new Simply Small
product line not only brings consumers back to
the bread aisle, but helps to alleviate some of
the waste in today's food industry," said Diana
Kattan, associate brand manager of Arnold,
Brownberry and Oroweat.
Also to broaden the appeal of its products,
B.B.U. took steps during the year to eliminate

all artificial preservatives, colors and flavors
from its Whole Grains line of bread products
sold under the Arnold, Brownberry and Oroweat
brands. The move is part of B.B.U.'s "No Added
Nonsense" initiative.
B.B.U. said the three brands also have removed monoglycerides, diacetyl tartaric acid
esters of monoglycerides (DATEM) and highfructose corn syrup from the Whole Grains
line. The line includes Oatnut, 100% Whole
Wheat, 12 Grain, Healthy Multi-Grain and
Health Nut.
In the United States and globally, Bimbo
stood out in its sustainability. In August, the
company announced the launch of Mexico's
first compostable packaging for bread. The
action was among initiatives presented at an
event held on Aug. 20 in Mexico City, which the
company titled, "Innovation and commitment to
responsible waste management."
Also during the year the company signed a
five-vehicle purchase order with Motiv Power
Systems for electric delivery vans. The vehicles
will feature Motiv's all-electric EPIC 6 chassis

Matt O'Leary, c.e.o. of Motiv, said last-mile
delivery of baked foods is "a perfect case for
EPIC based step vans." B.B.U. debuted a fleet
of vehicles fueled by emissions-reducing, domestically produced propane autogas in early
2016.
Bimbo Bakeries USA announced in January
that 14 of its U.S. baking plants have been
granted Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star certification for 2018.
B.B.U. baking plants that received Energy
Star status are in Auburn, N.Y.; Dubuque, Iowa;
Escondido, Calif.; Fergus Falls, Minn.; Gastonia, N.C.; La Crosse, Wis.; Oconomowoc, Wis.;
Olean, N.Y.; Phoenix; Reading, Pa.; Roseville,
Minn.; Sacramento, Calif.; Salt Lake City; and
San Luis Obispo, Calif. Eleven of the 14 plants
also were Energy Star certified in 2017. New to
the 2018 list was the Roseville plant.
To recognize the company's sustainability
efforts, Baking & Snack launched its first Sustainability Award, presented to Grupo Bimbo,
Mexico City. CP
