INDUSTRY REVIEW: GRAIN-BASED FOODS
America announced plans to change its name to Aspire Bakeries.
Another notable development during the year was a decision, more
recently, of George Weston Ltd., Toronto, to sell its Weston Foods baking
subsidiary. Weston in March announced plans to exit the business. Weston,
also a major food retailer in Canada, has been in the baking business since
the 1880s.
The company produces private label products and many well-known
brands, including Wonder, Ace Bakery, Country Harvest, D'Italiano, Casa
Mendosa, Dave's Killer Bread and Gadoua. The company has more than
5,000 employees and operates 40 baking plants and other facilities in Canada
and the United States.
As of late September, Weston had not yet announced a buyer for the business,
but in an August update, Richard Dufresne, president and chief financial
officer of George Weston, expressed optimism that a transaction would be announced
this fall.
In a more modest transaction, in June, Flowers Foods announced it had
acquired Koffee Kup Bakery from a court-appointed receiver of the assets.
Based in Burlington, Vt., Koffee Kup Bakery is a manufacturer of baked foods,
including bread, donuts and English muffins, serving customers in the Northeast
and Mid-Atlantic regions. The company ceased operations on April 26 at
its three baking facilities located in Brattleboro, Vt.; Burlington, Vt.; and North
Grosvenor Dale, Conn.
Mr. McMullian said the acquisition gives Flowers a greater presence in the
Northeast, a market where the company has been growing in recent years.
While not specifically in bread, Crown Bakeries also has been an active
buyer. In June, the company said it acquired Lawrence, Mass.-based Bagel
Boy, Inc., the largest baker of premium, New York-style bagels in New England.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Three weeks earlier,
Nashville, Tenn.-based Crown Bakeries said it had acquired Michel's Bakery, a
Philadelphia-based baker specializing in large-scale, private label baking for
distributors and quick-service customers nationwide and throughout the world.
Crown Bakeries is a new name for The Bakery Cos. The rebranding was announced
in February.

Crackers remain a bit quiet
The pandemic provided a much needed boost to the crackers category, driving
dollar sales to $7.5 billion in the 52 weeks ended July 12, 2020, according
to IRI. This total was up sharply from just over $7 billion in the 52 weeks ended
Aug. 11, 2019.
As consumers have settled into a new normal, though, dollar sales growth
in the cracker category slowed over the past 52 weeks. At $7.6 billion, dollar
sales in the 52 weeks ended July 11, 2021, were up only 0.2% from the
same period a year ago, while unit sales, at 2.86 billion units, were down
