in an attractive retail package. A 1956 report by extension poultryagent Arthur Gannon observed, "Mr. Jewell is sometimes spoken of
as the 'daddy' of the Georgia broiler industry, and he has probably
had more to do with its progress than any other one man."
As insightful and influential as Jewell was, one wonders if he ever
imagined how much the poultry industry would grow and that Georgia would be leading the way. Whereas in the late 1940s, the entire
broiler industry was processing about 24 million birds per year, today
the state of Georgia alone produces 24.6 million pounds of chicken
meat per day.
In addition to producing huge volumes of high-quality food for the
domestic and export markets, poultry processing has been good to the
people of north Georgia. The rise of the poultry industry helped fill the
economic void created by the fall of the cotton industry. Despite ongoing mechanization, the poultry industry continues to employ thousands
of people in Hall and other northeastern Georgia counties.

Poultry processing also integrated its workforce earlier than other
industries, according to historian Carl Weinberg. In a 2003 paper
entitled, "Chicken Goes Global," Weinberg remarked, "Unlike textile
mills, which totally barred African-Americans from inside employment
for decades, the processing plants in the Gainesville area offered
these workers jobs." Referring to an interview with poultry executive
and inventor Jack Prince-who had climbed the corporate ladder at
Jesse D. Jewell, Inc. and married Jewell's daughter before establishing further processing equipment manufacturer Prince Industries-
Weinberg said that Prince had "pointed to [workforce integration] as a
feather in the poultry industry's cap."
