Since the start of the second George W.
Bush administration, it seems that the
culture wars between Democrats and
Republicans have become ever more
heated-if that's possible. Much of the
action has taken place in the Senate,
where the focus has centered on whether or not to confirm the President's picks
for federal appeals courts.
Until the two parties worked out a
compromise, it appeared that Democrats
would continue filibustering as a way to
derail the President's nominees. Following the deal, Democrats promised not to
filibuster. But they didn't sign a pledge
saying they would not try to stop the appointees or Republican efforts in other
areas. The Terri Schiavo right-to-die
case turned into a moral debate over
whether she was being killed by her
husband. The conditions at the prison
camp for terrorists at Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba, turned into a partisan wrangle.
So while it wouldn't seem that
something as technical and limited to
the food industry as country-of-origin
labeling would turn into a bipartisan
debate, it's not all that surprising that it
has, considering America's adversarial
political climate. Most Democrats support the current law, if it ever goes into
effect, requiring meat products-but
not poultry-to be labeled with the
animal's country-of-origin. A majority
of the GOP, on the other hand, supports
a change to "voluntary COOL," which
would allow meat processors and retailers to label meat products with countryof-origin information. Some Democrats
and Republicans fall on the opposite
sides of the battle, but not many.
