■ A survey conducted by researchers at
the Center for Media and Public Affairs
suggests that urban media present rural
America "as a vestige of our past facing
an uncertain future."
Researchers found that only 3 percent of coverage of rural life included
farming, and only 1 percent of all sources
who were quoted had any connection to
agriculture. However, the study also revealed that 77 percent of terms used to
describe rural life had a positive tone.

■ Retail food and beverage sales aimed
at women increased 80 percent between
2000 and 2004 and are forecast to reach
$58.7 billion by 2009, according to a report by
Packaged Facts. This
growth is due to the
food industry's realization that women
have special nutritional needs and
consume more
health and diet
products.

■ USA Today reports a steady decline in
the kid population in the United States.
In 1980, 28 percent of the population was
under 18 years old. In 2000, the figure
was 26 percent, and by 2020, the figure is
expected to be 24 percent. The senior
population is estimated to double by
2050, from 12 percent of the U.S. population in 2004 to a projected 21 percent by
2050. This has a variety of implications for
the food industry, from ingredients to
packaging.
