Tom Hayes has been named the new
president of Cargill Meat Solutions,
Wichita, Kan. He replaces Bill Buckner, who will focus more on his role
as a Cargill corporate vice president.
Buckner, however, will remain involved in C.M.S. Hayes, a 24-year
veteran of Minneapolis-based Cargill,
Inc., had been in charge of the company's case-ready division since 1996.
John Keating has assumed that post.
Hayes oversees a C.M.S. team that
includes: Keating; Bill Rupp, president of Cargill Beef; John O'Carroll,
president of Cargill Turkey and ValueAdded Meats; Dirk Jones, president of
Cargill Pork; and Rob Heitoff, head of
Cargill Food Distribution.
Laurel, Miss.-based
Sanderson Farms, Inc.
has appointed Lorri
Devereaux as manager of central processing, Todd Ormon
as division manager
Devereaux
at the Moultrie Processing in Georgia,
and Michael Taylor
as broiler manager at
Moultrie Production.
Devereau has been
with the company
Ormon
since 1987, starting
as a cost accountant
at Laurel Processing,
and most recently,
serving as financial
analyst. Ormon began
his poultry career in
the training program
Taylor
with Sanderson Farms
in 1992, yet most recently was the
director of processing for Marshall
Durbin. Taylor previously worked
with Gold Kist, Southern States and
most recently with Georgia Poultry
Equipment Co.
Hormel Foods Corp., Austin, Minn.,
recently announced the planned retirement of James Jorgenson, senior
vice president, staff services, and
Dr. Forrest Dryden, vice president,

research and development. They will
both complete their careers at the end
of the year. Effective with Jorgenson's
retirement, his former responsibilities
will be restructured. William Snyder,
currently vice president, operations, refrigerated foods, will advance to senior
vice president, supply chain, and David
Juhlke, currently vice president, human
resources and administration, at Jennie-O Turkey Store, will be promoted
to vice president, human resources. Dr.
Phillip Minerich will succeed Dryden
as the new vice president, research and
development. The company's quality assurance initiatives will be led by
Bryan Farnsworth, who advances to
vice president. Farnsworth will report
to Snyder upon Dryden's retirement.
Succeeding Snyder as vice president,
operations, refrigerated foods, is Bruce
Schweitzer, currently general manager
at the Austin plant facility. Additionally,
the board elected Julie Craven, currently director of corporate communications, to vice president of the company's
corporate communications.
Michael Helgeson, C.E.O. of Gold'n
Plump Poultry, St. Cloud, Minn., was
recently presented the Entrepreneur of
the Year award from Ernst & Young at
a special reception in Minneapolis. He
received the award in the Consumer
Products category for Minnesota and
the Dakotas.
West Liberty, Iowa-based West Liberty
Foods, a co-packer
and private label
manufacturer of sliced
processed meat and
poultry products, has
named Gerald Lessard C.O.O. Lessard
Lessard
joined West Liberty
Foods in April 2004 as vice president
of operations. He will continue to oversee production operations at plants in
West Liberty, Sigourney and Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
Dr. Barbara Masters has been
named administrator of the U.S. Dept.

of Agriculture's Food Safety and
Inspection Service. In her new role,
the agency veteran will oversee the
regulation of meat, poultry and processed egg products, which constitute
40 percent of the American food dollar. Masters has served as the acting
administrator of F.S.I.S. since March
1, 2004. She began her F.S.I.S. career
in 1989 as a veterinary medical officer
near Hot Springs, Ark., and has since
held a variety of posts throughout
the agency, both in the field and at
headquarters. Her previous positions
include director of slaughter operations staff, branch chief in processing
operations, and a staff officer in the
technology transfer and coordination
staff. "We have worked constructively
with Masters during her 16 month
tenure as acting F.S.I.S. administrator
and look forward to interacting with
her as the agency administrator," said
A.M.I. President J. Patrick Boyle.
In other news, Lloyd Day is the
new administrator of U.S.D.A.'s Agriculture Marketing Service. Since
2002, Day has served as special
assistant to the administrator of the
Foreign Agricultural Service.
Additionally, Dr. Karen Hulebak,
senior advisor for scientific affairs at
F.S.I.S., was elected a vice chairperson
on the Codex Alimentarius Commission during the organization's 28th
Session in Rome. Hulebak has been active in the commission for many years,
most recently as the chairperson of the
Food Hygiene Committee.
The National Pork Board, Des Moines,
has hired Allan Stokes as its new director of environmental programs for
the Pork Checkoff. He most recently
served as C.O.O. for America's Clean
Water Foundation, a private, nonprofit
organization dedicated to protecting
water quality through education and
research. His primary responsibility is
the development, implementation and
coordination of programs related to
improving air quality and odor, water
quality and conservation and swine
waste management.
