different set of challenges. She points
out that perhaps because consistency
and quality aren't extremely variable
in the poultry processing industry, the
demand for cloning chickens or turkeys
doesn't appear to be especially high.
"No one is cloning chickens so far," she
says. "It hasn't been successful."
Down on the pharm
Few will argue that F.D.A. is the
biggest hold up now.
"It's really a political situation at
this point," says Dr. Mark Walton,
ViaGen's president. "The technology is commercially viable right now,
and the meat processors are also just
waiting for the nod from F.D.A., and
no one is asking for any more proof
from researchers.

"I'm not aware of any of the big processors who are saying, 'If you could
only show us "this" from a technology
standpoint, then we'll be ready to go.' I
haven't heard that from anybody."
