number of breeding operations closed.
However, Herb McLane, C.B.B.C's executive vice president, says the numbers are difficult to quantify. "There's
been systematic hurt to the industry,"
he says. "The international market presented a viable market for our producers. Also, for many of them, it's the
cream on the top that provides for added
investment back home,"
While some markets restored access
for semen and embryos fairly quickly
after the discovery of B.S.E. in Canada,
others - such as the growth market of
western China - have taken considerable time. "It's easy to close markets,"
McLane says, "but it's a lot harder to
get them open."
Purebred breeders along the Canada-U.S. border who dedicated themselves to serving the American market
for Canadian breeding stock have been
especially "hurt." For some, the border
closure meant the loss of roughly onethird of their market.
While some have gone out of business, others have turned to selling
embryos or semen as a way of partially replacing income. In 2003, Canadian breeders sold purebred beef
embryos into 10 different markets,
McLane points out. In 2005, the number of markets had increased to 14,
with Russia providing a big boost.
Similarly, markets for purebred semen have increased since the border
closure. In 2003, Canadian breeders
sold frozen beef semen to 28 markets.
Last year, the number of markets expanded to 41.
"Certainly the U.S. market is our No.
1 destination," McLane says. "It historically has been and it will be again once
access is restored. And we hope that's
as soon as possible."
