At the PSF plant, almost 900 of the
1,000 employees participated in the survey. While the company's safety training
was rated very highly and employees
felt confident they would be well taken
care of if there were an accident, there
were areas with lower ratings that surprised corporate leaders.
In some cases, employees felt supervisors were not recognizing them for
their safety efforts and were not always
able to adequately answer the questions
they might have about safety. They also
indicated a desire to be more involved
in setting objectives for safety. Further,
they wanted to help find ways to motivate the entire workforce in meeting
their safety goals.
"We realized we have to put safety
on the table everyday," said Ellsworth.
"This program provided us with an opportunity to look for new areas to create awareness with both management
and employees."
The following year, Premium Standard Farms worked on the issues raised
by employees surveyed. They provided
encouragement and support to push
supervisors to become more active in
working with employees on safety issues. They engaged employees in safety
discussions that set expectations about

performance. And they made sure employees had more information about
areas where they had questions.
"Currently we have 11 different teams
on different safety topics in place. Onetenth of our employee population is involved with each team having an area of
expertise such as emergency response
and incident investigation," said Ellsworth of Premium Standard Farms' improved safety program.
By February 2007, a year after the
survey, the plant had worked the
equivalent of 2 million hours without a lost-time accident. They experienced a 74 percent reduction in losttime cases, a 75 percent reduction in
restricted-day cases and a 65 percent
reduction in Workers' Compensation
dollar losses.

Dramatic results
The results compared to industry benchmarks were even more dramatic. PSF
had a 0.09 rate for lost-time incidents
compared to the industry average of 1.3.
The company's restricted-day incident
rate was 0.45 compared to the industry
average of 4.8. And the total incident
rate for the company was 1.45 - a fraction of the 6.5 industry average.

"The trends our company set in 2006
will be mirrored in 2007, if not slightly
better," said Ellsworth. "This is not a fadtype program. We have utilized the information and the results have continued,
demonstrating to me the value."
Travelers' Safety View employee survey cannot guarantee the same level of
improvement for every company. The
survey is well-suited for companies
that already have an aggressive, effective safety program in place but that
are looking for a way to jump-start a
higher level of safety performance. It
also requires a corporate leadership
that is willing to hold up a mirror to its
own commitment, listen to what may
seem like harsh truths, and then take
action based on what is learned. Not
every company is willing to do that -
but progressive processors have demonstrated that for those who make the
effort and take the process seriously,
there is potential for increasing safety
and improving risk management by listening to their employees.
