but now the higher value of fuel and
the spiraling cost of disposal make
such technologies cost effective.
The producer side of both the redand white-meat industry is in the
doldrums with low prices, high costs
and low margins. As a consequence,
companies such as Seaboard, Foster
Farms and Sanderson Farms have put
plans for new plant or plant expansions on hold. There are some new
plants being built, Caviness Meats is
expanding its new plant in Hereford,
Texas, while, despite some well-publicized delays, Northern Beef Packers
continues to build its new slaughterhouse in Aberdeen, S.D., and WPMP's
planned new beef plant in Tulare,

Calif., continues to move forward.
And here's another indication of the
fragile status of the meat producer
and slaughterhouse sectors - after
a fire at the Cargill Meat Solutions
beef plant in Booneville, Ark. this
past spring, the company decided
not to rebuild as it had adequate capacity elsewhere. CMS, like Tyson,
has been reducing both production
volumes and capacity.
While one industry sector struggles,
however, another sector is flourishing. The further-processing industry
is buoyant and currently in a capitalspending mode. While Keystone Foods
recently announced plans to build a
new $118 million plant in Gadson, Ala.,
and Hormel in Dubuque, Iowa, Heinz
Foods has already started building a
new plant in Florence, S.C.
