They also offer jerky in a shredded or
floss style, and feature jerky "from the style
of the Cowboy", which is more of a U.S.influenced jerky, but their effort to bring
Southeast Asian flavors to North America
has remained their guiding light.
A walk through a local supermarket
with Phil provides the discovery of one
or two of Soo Singapore Jerky's products in most aisles. The cooler section of
most Vancouver chain grocers seems to
hold a supply of their specialty pork sausages as well as a variety of other meat
items. Among the most popular products
among the ethnic market are Chinese/
Taiwanese and Filipino-style sausages
(Xiang Chang and Longaniza).
Phil and Soo exhibit a friendly, opendoor approach to competitors in the
industry. He served three years on the
board of directors of the American Association of Meat Processors, representing the provinces of Canada, and was
elected as first vice president.

In 1989, the company
began shipping
products throughout
Canada and into the
United States.
In 2002, he was honored by the
Taiwanese government with the Overseas Chinese Entrepreneur of the Year
Award. Phil does not boast about his
achievements, a testament to the fact
that he is committed to his religion and
attributing everything to his faith.

Phil is not a bragger and certainly
not a complainer. A few years ago when
the news broke about bovine spongiform encephalopathy being discovered
in Canada, his beef-export business to
the U.S. dried up almost overnight. He
worked diligently to get Australian beef
for his jerky and related products and
stuck it out. A few months later, he was
back in full stride with the exports.
When asked if he ever had qualms
about not pursuing his earlier career as a
carpenter and furniture maker, Phil only
smiles and proudly talks of his satisfaction
in the role he and his family have made in
introducing the flavors of Southeast Asia
to the North American palate.
