expansive booth that welcomes visitors 365
days a year. "When you are focusing on your
customers," says Emmel, "the result can't be
anything but positive. You can have some
very fruitful discussions here." Beyond existing only as a venue for hosting customer
visits and touting the company's wares and
expertise, another purpose for the Packforum is to serve as just that: a forum for customers to utilize for meetings and conferences to educate and present ideas to their
employees and others in the industry. Several events have already been held at the
facility, including a two-day Ready Meals
Forum focusing on food-packaging trends,
a one-day seminar on microwave-heating
technology and a two-day meeting of the
Research Chefs Association. Emmel hopes
this activity level continues. "Our goal is to
have something held here every day," he
says, "and customer visits are the key. It's
their place; we built it for them."

Designed for 'wow'
Knowing the facility would be visited extensively by customers industry executives, developers of Packforum Americas
dedicated a lot of time on the design and
flow of the interior. Few of the design aspects were left to chance inside the facility,
which is tucked inside an unassuming industrial park lined with green parkays and
maturing trees. Upon entering the reception area, designers entice visitors to look
through random portholes, almost like a
cruise ship, in the brightly-colored walls
that give a glimpse of the rest of the operation, including one of the two test kitchens
and long and winding hallways. "We want
to give people that 'Wow' feeling as soon
as they walk in," Emmel says, and inspire
them to investigate, discover and explore
new things and ideas. Plenty of glass is used
to allow for both separation and sharing of
spaces in the facility. Cryovac enlisted the
assistance of a color physiologist to ensure
the form and function was just right. They
call it a forward-looking design.
Even the floor has a design goal. Following
what Emmel calls the "yellow-brick road," an
almost meandering harvest-colored wooden
floor winds through the reception area into
a glass-walled conference room with seating
