THE INSIDER HAILING THE HOT DOG The hot dog, while originating in Germany as the frankfurter, has evolved into arguably America's most recognized food. Nowhere is this more evident than in Chicago, where the hot dog is so prevalent that the city has one named after it, the dragged-through-the-garden Chicago Dog. So it makes sense that Chicago's new Foodseum, the city's first food museum, will feature the hot dog in its first exhibit. "The Hot Dog and Encased Meat of the World" runs through Dec. 20. According to Kyle Joseph, executive director of Foodseum, the exhibit "fully showcases the history of and international obsession with encased meat." The Foodseum features interactive exhibits focusing on smell, touch and taste. "Food is such an important part of each of our lives," Joseph said. "Foodseum will provide visitors a fun and interactive window into what's behind it all. DIVINE CUISINE During Pope Francis' visit to the US this past month, the owner of New York's Buenos Aires restaurant, Chef Ismael Alba, was ordained as the Pontif's food preparer. According to the New York Post, Alba was asked to cook a modest meal of lemon-flavored grilled chicken for the Pope while he visited the Big Apple. Alba hoped to spoil him with a steak, but found out the Pope is on a "doctor-ordered diet." 114 MEAT+ POULTRY | 10.15 | www.meatpoultry.com Organic beef burgers - called the McB and Long McB - are coming to McDonald's Germany as a limitedtime offering, starting Oct. 1 through Nov. 18. McDonald's sourced the 100 percent organic beef from farms in Germany and Austria, the company said. The limited-time offering addresses consumer demand for organic beef while engaging McDonald's in the growing trend of organic food production. The McB combines an organic beef patty with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, red onion rings, Edam cheese, various sauces and dark bread. Starting Oct. 26, participating restaurants will serve the Long McB which is topped with arugula, Maasdam cheese, red onion rings, tomato and a spicy sauce. Photo: McDonald's Photo: Burger King BK'S PICK FOR A HALLOWEEN "BOO-GER" Burger King customers looking to get into the Halloween spirit can purchase a "Halloween Whopper" featuring a black hamburger bun through Oct. 31. The fast-food company rolled out the boo-ger Sept. 28. The burgers, selling for $4.99, feature buns baked with A.1., according to a news release. "Layered between the buns is savory flamegrilled beef topped with melted American cheese, ripe tomatoes, fresh lettuce, creamy mayonnaise, A.1. Thick and Hearty Sauce, crunchy pickles and sliced white onions." Last year, Burger King Japan tested burgers with black hamburger buns, black cheese and black ketchup, using squid ink and bamboo charcoal. Now that is scary. http://www.meatpoultry.com
