PITMASTER SUMMER SCHOOL

Three-time World Barbecue Champion Myron Mixon, of Myron Mixon
Smokers, will host his 12th barbecue school at Myron Mixon Smokers
headquarters in Waterford, Connecticut, from July 15-17. The school is
designed for barbecue enthusiasts of all levels.
Mixon will cover meat selection and preparation of the four main
proteins (brisket, pork butt, ribs and chicken), as well as rubs, marinades,
injections and sauces. Students will also learn cook times and temperatures.

Village Vanguard, a boutique store in
Japan, offers large backpacks that
resemble steaks. The backpacks,
which retail for $20, are made of
velour and feature adjustable straps
and an inside pocket.
Stateside, Cartoon Network
reportedly plans to release a
cheeseburger backpack similar to one
shown in the cartoon, "Steven
Universe." The backpack comes fully
loaded with tomato, cheese, patty and
buns that unzip to reveal two inside
pockets. The Steven Universe
Cheeseburger backpack is available
for pre-order with merchandise to
ship by July 5.

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES
At a May 9 press conference during
this year's IFFA trade show in
Frankfurt, Germany, Hans-Joachim
Boekstegers, CEO and managing
director of Wolfertschwenden,
Germany-based Multivac, provided
interesting insight into global events
and factors influencing the packaging
industry and the food industry at
large. Economic hurdles like the
skyrocketing inflation rate in
Venezuela and the stronger US dollar
significantly influence performance

for companies like Multivac, the
executive said. Meanwhile, "Asia is
still a sleeping elephant," he said,
pointing out that countries like China
are among the world's leaders when it
comes to food consumption; however
most of that food is not packaged.
This, he concluded, is both a
challenge and a huge opportunity.

During a trip to Shanghai in May for the
SIAL China trade show, M+P's Managing
Editor Kimberlie Clyma spotted a
Smithfield pork advertisement in the
Shanghai Pudong Airport. The billboard,
promoting Smithfield bacon, ham and
hot dogs, features the translated slogan,
"Pure America. Smithfield."
