JBS USA
JBS USA announced on Jan. 4 that it
reached $100 million in its Hometown
Strong initiative. JBS started the program
in May 2020 and said it worked with
community leaders and officials to identify
investment opportunities in rural areas
where the company operates.
" From education and recreation
to health care and social services, we
have been partnering with our local
communities to invest in a variety of
projects - all with the goal of strengthening
the places where our team members live
and work, " said Tim Schellpeper, JBS
USA's chief executive officer.
At the beginning of the COVID-19
pandemic, JBS made a $50 million
commitment. During that time, more
than $43 million has been invested in 200
projects in 42 communities across 25 US
states and Alberta, Canada.
Following the preliminary financing,
JBS made $10 million of in-kind donations
of meat and poultry products to food
banks around the United States. In June
2021, JBS announced investing $20 million
to create affordable housing opportunities
for local rural communities.
JBS has sponsored or completed a
number of projects including an early
childhood education building in Grand
Island, Neb., an indoor sports complex
in Ottumwa, Iowa, and a park space and
community garden in Green Bay, Wis.
Tyson Foods
Tyson Foods Inc.,
donated more than 16
million lbs of protein
- the equivalent of 64
million meals - to fight
hunger in fiscal 2021. The
food donations, valued at
$36 million, were given
to food banks, pantries
and hunger relief
organizations in plant
communities and across
the nation.

As part of its commitment to education,
Perdue Farms has awarded the Cal Ripken,
Sr. Foundation (CRSF) a $60,000 grant
from the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue
Foundation to help bring STEM Centers
to two Accomack County elementary
schools in rural Eastern Shore of Virginia.
The donation is part of Perdue's Delivering
Hope To Our Neighbors initiative focused
on improving quality of life and building
stronger communities where Perdue
employees live and work.
" We appreciate the support of our
community for providing this exciting
educational opportunity to our students
and thank the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation
for thinking of us, " said Rhonda Hall, PhD,
assistant superintendent for instruction for
Accomack County Public Schools.
The CRSF has opened 140 fully
operational and turnkey STEM Centers in
elementary and middle schools in 16 states.
" STEM opportunities are lacking in
many rural communities such as Accomack
County, " said Kim Nechay, executive
director of the Perdue Foundation. " We at
Perdue are honored to partner with them
to make it happen. The educational tools
these kids will now have access to are not
only fun but state of the art. "

Hormel Foods
Hormel Foods Corp. has donated more
than 93,000 lbs of Hormel Cure 81 spiral
hams to Convoy of Hope to assist those
impacted by the devastating tornadoes
in Kentucky. In addition to Kentucky,
over 5,700 hams are being distributed to
numerous food shelves throughout Texas.
" As a global branded food company,
we are thrilled to donate these hams that
can provide over 490,000 meals to those
people and families in need, " said Wendy
Watkins, senior vice president and chief
communications officer for Hormel Foods.
Hormel Foods has donated more than
$50 million in cash and product donations
to nonprofit organizations over the last five
years, including $6.4 million in hunger-relief
donations in 2020. The company has
partnered with Convoy of Hope for six
years, contributing product and monetary
donations to help those affected by natural
disasters and feeding food insecure families.
Almost 10 million
lbs of the food donated
by the company in 2021
was distributed through
the Community Pantry
Program (CPP), a hunger
relief initiative started by
the company to address
the issue of hunger in
rural communities. There
are currently 42 pantries
in the network.
In response to the
recent tornado damage
in Kentucky and
Tennessee, the company
donated around 1
million meals to help
feed families and relief
workers. The company's
disaster relief efforts
last year also included
providing 650,000 meals
and multiple truckloads
of ice to Louisiana
communities affected by
Hurricane Ida.
