used to make casings for a variety of
meat or alternative protein products
based on recycled polyethylene and
polyamide. Thermoforming film that
is made of PP (polypropylene) is also
completely recyclable.
An easy way to reduce the amount
of plastic in packaging is to save on
materials. Tubular bag films are on the
rise as a replacement for classic tray
packaging. They are up to ten times
thinner and lighter than conventional
MAP trays with a protective gas
atmosphere (Modified Atmosphere
Packaging) and therefore save up to 70
percent plastic per packaging unit.
Even with changes in the packaging
industry there are still meat products
that need traditional tray packaging.
Some manufacturers have been able
to reduced plastic content by 80- 85
percent compared to conventional
plastic trays.
Combination packaging also was
highlighted at IFFA as many companies
across the meat and poultry industry
incorporate old and new materials and
other innovations.
One of the products was Multivac's
" Eco Bowl " which uses a fully
recyclable corrugated tray for modified
atmosphere-based packages.The plastic
content, reduced by 85% compared to
conventional plastic trays, is limited
to the skin and top film. Another
model, " FoodTray, " consists of a
cardboard tray made from renewable
raw materials and two thin sheets of
recyclable plastic. The manufacturer is
thus reducing plastic consumption by
around 80%.
Another promising area is
biodegradable packaging based on
renewable or raw materials. Companies
are looking at products that could be
degradable in seawater. Experiments
are also being carried out with closable
paper bags whose barrier layers consist
of proteins and waxes. The proteins
serve as an oxygen barrier and the
waxes as a water vapor barrier. Sugar
cane, algae, mushrooms or lactic
acid are other raw materials that are
suitable for the development of biobased
packaging.
One example is Bio-SamPak, a
compostable film made from renewable
cellulose, the main component of plant
cell walls.
An added favorable solution showed
at IFFA was chemical plastic recycling.
Traditional plastic films, most
commonly used in food packaging,
could convert their raw materials into
pyrolysis oil or synthesis gas. From
there, recovered materials can be used
again for production.
Lastly, smart packaging remains
a research trend that actively
addresses the issue of protecting meat
products. Smart packaging keeps the
temperature stable, absorbs unwanted
ripening gases and prevents germs.
