COMMENTARY
Documentary of a lifetime
An awesome thing happened during a
trip I took to Wisconsin last month to
interview Dr. Kurt Vogel and his animal
welfare-focused meat science team
at the University of Wisconsin-River
Falls for this month's cover story (See
" Hands-on education, " Page 16).
A few days before hitting the road,
I was contacted by John Festervand,
director of development for the
College of Agricultural Sciences at
Colorado State University. He said he
was also going to be in River Falls to
interview Vogel as part of an upcoming
documentary about CSU's iconic
animal science professor Temple
Grandin, PhD. The film, titled An Open
Door, will be released later this year,
and I wanted to learn more.
The morning after arriving in
Wisconsin, I was excited to have the
opportunity to meet Festervand, who
is executive producer of the film, and
learn more about his passion project.
The idea behind it evolved quickly after
he somewhat serendipitously met with
Grandin in 2020. Like most people,
Festervand was intrigued and inspired
by her and he learned more about her
during what became regular visits,
when they would talk over coffee or
often, a meal of pulled pork. Watching
the 2010 HBO biopic about her earlier
years, Temple Grandin, piqued his
interest even more. Festervand soon
realized the profound effect Grandin's
accomplishments as an animal welfare
expert, autism advocate, author and
educator had on the lives of so many
people throughout the world.
After watching the film, he
recognized how much she had
achieved since Claire Daines' Emmyaward-winning
portrayal ended, not
accounting for the past four decades.
" When I finished watching the HBO
movie, which was beautifully done, I
just wondered, 'well, she was 35 and
she was getting her PhD at that time,' "
Festervand said. " I knew she was going
to turn 75 in a few months and it was
obvious that there was a lot of her life
story that hadn't been told between the
ages of 35 and 75. "
It made sense to Festervand to tell
the rest of the story, from Grandin,
her colleagues, friends, industry
professionals and her former graduate
students, like Vogel. He connected with
a fellow CSU alum and award-winning
filmmaker, John Barnhardt, and shared
his vision for making a documentary
film to fill the 40-year void in Grandin's
story and he jumped at the chance to
be the director.
The pace of the project has been
frantic since CSU officials gave
their blessing to move ahead on the
documentary in June 2022. Within
about two months, production
commenced with a camera crew
capturing footage at Grandin's 75th
birthday celebration on the CSU
campus on Aug. 29, 2022. Working
alongside Festervand and Barnhardt
are nine CSU students who are gaining
hands-on experience working on the
production of a significant film project,
which Grandin is pleased to support.
Filming has taken the duo to
locations across the United States,
including following Grandin on a
13-city tour to promote her latest book,
" Visual Thinking. "
Along the way, they were able
to line up interviews with people in
regions where a book-signing was held,
to hear from dozens of people whose
lives have been influenced by Grandin,
either from her work in the autism
community or through connections
made in the meat industry.
The film's release is this month
with a private screening for family
and friends being held in late April at
CSU. Meanwhile the documentary will
be submitted to multiple film festivals
over the next year, with the hope that
its success will result in the film being
picked up by a distribution company.
Festervand and Barnhardt are
confident that An Open Door, will soon
be available on a streaming service
near you. Until then, there will be more
details about the project in the April
issue of MEAT+POULTRY.
