Great Range Bison is fulfilling the growing
consumer demand for ground bison products

he retail and foodservice market for
bison products is growing in the United
States - and Rocky Mountain Natural
Meats' founder and president Bob
Dineen couldn't be happier.
" There's bison product on an awful
lot of grocery store shelves today that
weren't there 20 years ago, " Dineen said. " Our
industry, since it's so small, sort of flies under
the radar a lot of the time. But there's a consumer
out there spending $9 to $10 a pound on
ground bison on a regular basis. "
Henderson, Colo.-based Rocky Mountain
Natural Meats is targeting this consumer with
its line of Great Range Bison branded products.
2021 GROUND MEAT TRENDS + TECHNOLOGY MEAT+POULTRY
The line includes bison sirloin, ribeye, strip loin,
tenderloin, flank and skirt steaks, steak medallions,
stew meat, tri tip and pot roast. But its No.
1 retail item is its 90% lean Great Range Premium
Ground Bison in 1-lb case-ready bricks.
SUPPLY AND DEMAND
In 1987, Dineen started Rocky Mountain Natural
Meats and subsequently introduced the Great
Range Bison brand after managing a ranch in
Colorado in the late '80s and seeing the potential
for a niche market for bison.
Bison burgers are
becoming a popular item
on foodservice menus
around the country.
" There was no consistency in the products
before, " he explained. Dineen tried to solve that
problem by focusing on quality animals that
would yield quality product.
For the first 10 years, the Great Range Bison
product was mostly sold in the Denver area -
at retailers such as King Sooper's, Safeway and
Albertsons. The brand also had a decent presence
in the foodservice market in Denver.
In 1998, Rocky Mountain Natural Meats
started producing its bison products in the production
facility it built in Denver. At that time,
slaughter and fabrication were outsourced to
other facilities, but the cutting and grinding was
done in-house.
