" So, it'll go directly from the portioning
machine right into the package pockets
without any human contact with the pick and
place machine, " said Ryan Spencer, product
marketing manager at MULTIVAC. " And then
the R 275 packaging machine will produce a
really beautiful fresh vacuum skin pack that
shows off that premium product in a package
that really stands out on the retail shelves. "
Automation: Bridging the Gap
As the meat processing industry continues
to evolve, automation is not only addressing
labor shortages but also playing a key role
in enhancing sustainability. Automation
reduces the risk of material waste,
particularly when it comes to packaging films,
and allows processors to use thinner materials,
further minimizing their environmental impact.
" When you have more automated systems
and less manual intervention, you're less
likely to waste film, and you can potentially
downgrade your film into thinner portions or
thinner material so you can put less into the
landfills, " Fischer said.
Despite the progress, the meat industry still lags
behind other manufacturing sectors in automation.
However, this presents an opportunity for
further growth and development.
" It's not only that they don't have employees
to run the machines, " Fischer added. " They

may have eight lines, but they may only have
staff to run three or four lines. So, automation
can help reduce that employee count so
you can have fewer people and get more
production lines running. "
While the meat processing industry is
catching up in automation and sustainability,
the growing focus on these areas is setting
the stage for a future where efficiency,
environmental stewardship, and technological
innovation go hand in hand.
