" Sometimes lot codes are used for internal
quality control. If you have a pallet of
packages that didn't seal properly, you can
go back from a maintenance perspective
and take a look at what happened during
that time period that could have impacted
the performance of the equipment, " Mekler
says. " Once those packages leave the plant
and go out into the supply chain to the
distribution center and to the retailers, that
traceability code is critical to being able to
effectively manage a recall. Those codes are
crucial to manage getting product out of
the supply chain, off the retail shelf, which
ultimately will minimize the impact on the
business. "
