The company runs two MULTIVAC R245
thermoforming packaging machines to
vacuum package its retail products.
" As our business grew, we needed to
upgrade, " Byrd said. " Recently we've been
working with MULTIVAC on an automated line
to help load our vacuum packaging machine.
They gave us multiple potential solutions for
the various lines we had.
" We wanted to consider all our options, so
we asked them [MULTIVAC] what we should
do. They've got some great engineers who
are very responsive and offered a lot of ideas.
They came back with what they said would
best serve us and the products we run. "
As a small processor with limited capital
available for equipment upgrades, Carolina
Packers opted to upgrade just one of its two
thermoforming lines. The MULTIVAC H244
Automatic Loader will be integrated into

one of their existing R245 Thermoformers to
alleviate the need for manual labor to load the
sausages, red hots, hot dogs and bologna into
the machine. The H244 is a robotic pick-andplace
loader that utilizes vision to determine
the location of the product.
" MULTIVAC's fully integrated auto-loading
system will allow Carolina Packers to increase
production capacity while reducing labor, "
said Drew Linville, Regional Sales Associate,
MULTIVAC.
" We want to be as flexible as possible. We run
hot dogs, red hots, smoked sausage, bologna
- they all require different sized packaging.
Finding a versatile solution that could work
for all of these things was important to us
because we have a lot of changeovers here, "
Byrd said. " We're making small batches and
small quantities. It may not be super-efficient,
but we're trying to serve a lot of different
SKUs and make that fresh product that our
customers have grown to love. That's when
MULTIVAC came in and said, you need a
solution that's not just automated for one
product, it needs to be able to function for
various types of products. "
