Working to
give back
First, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kimberlie
Clyma and I'm the new editor of Pet Food Processing. Jennifer
Semple has moved on to a new endeavor and I look forward
to following in her footsteps. Jennifer did an amazing
job building this magazine from its inception four years ago,
sharing stories about innovation, technology and cuttingedge
processors. The magazine wouldn't be the success it is
today without her leadership, and I'm anxious to carry on.
While I am new to Pet Food Processing, I am a veteran of
parent company Sosland Publishing, spending most of my
16-year career with the company at MEAT+POULTRY magazine.
What I learned from my years covering the meat processing
industry is there is no better way to learn than to see
processing in action. Right out of the gate, I was given the opportunity
to see pet food production in action at Tuffy's Treat
Company's new pet treat and canning plant in Delano, Minn.
Touring the new facility, I got a firsthand look at the innovation
and focus toward food safety that went into the facility's
design and the care that goes into every product that is manufactured
there (read more about it on page 16). Tuffy's is all
about progress - meeting the needs of its current customers
and coming up with new ways to satisfy future customers.
But what really struck me during my visit to Tuffy's was
that while being a progressive, innovative company with an
eye toward expansion and growth, first and foremost Tuffy's
is a company with a mission of giving back. When choosing
a site for its new plant, it was crucial to the company's leaders
to pick a city they could support - not only financially by
bringing a successful business to town, but by being a part of
that community. The company is anxious to donate money to
fund a new ballpark, help fundraise for the schools or open
up a new dog park in town. That's why it chose to move to
Delano, Minn. - to make a difference in that community
just as it has done for years in Perham,
Minn. That has been at the core of the
Nelson family's business values since
the company started in 1964.
Mark Sailer, engineering director for
parent company KLN Familiy Brands,
told me growing their business isn't
about making a name for themselves,
it's about giving back. " We need to grow our business so we
can give back more. " That's an impressive business philosophy,
and one we could all use to help grow this industry.
