private label," he said. "Save-A-Lot operates about 1,300 stores in 35 states and the
District of Columbia, posts annual sales of
approximately $5 billion - and each week
serves more than 5 million customers." The
grocery chain also sells such national brand
items as soft drinks and American cheese
singles to draw traffic and ensure customers
shop there more often, he added.
Mr. Iserman joined Save-A-Lot after receiving his bachelor's degree in Culinology in 2014
at Southwest Minnesota State University. He
has also served as the grocery chain's associate research chef and product developer.
His current position as senior quality analyst includes product development, but most
of that initiative involves product emulation

instead of new product development. That
said, he has developed a number of items
that were new to Save-A-Lot's product portfolio. Those include a battered restaurantstyle French fry for the grocery chain's
Deliano's label; a chunky clam chowder for
its Kaskey's brand; and an array of authentic,
multicultural products under the Tío Santi line.
He is currently working on a reformulation of
the grocery chain's low-fat yogurts.

Value that tastes great
At Save-A-Lot, one of Mr. Iserman's main
priorities involves creating private label products that taste as good as the national brand
equivalent. "I will sample the national brand
and then try to replicate it - our goal we
have in place today is to get as close to that
