Cleaning hard-to-reach spots is
often overlooked.

Packers Sanitation Services,
Inc. (PSSI) offers a bundled service with Packers Chemical, Inc.
(PCI). The bundle, according to
the company, offers a comprehensive portfolio of chemistries
and contract services that essentially take sanitation product
purchases and execution out of
the facility's hands.
"We have the ability to mobilize 17,000 employees all over
the country," says Josh Kuepers,
PSSI's senior vice president of
operations. "Bundling brings consistency with chemicals. When
our teams are familiar with the
chemistry across all facilities we
serve, it makes their job safer and
decreases the risk of chemical
hazards."

by PSSI can help a facility when
it comes to employee safety,
inventory control, accountability,
reporting and training.

It's normally easy to remember to
clean and sanitize food contact
surfaces that are visible and
accessible, or the equipment that
is most frequently used, Kheradia says. But what generally gets
missed are the less obvious or
neglected areas of the plant.
Among these areas are
high-reaching sections of the
facility. "These are the relatively
inaccessible areas in the plant
where dust and other contaminants may accumulate," Kheradia
says. "They include unreachable
sections of walls, wall-ceiling
joints, overhead ﬁxtures, and
ceilings."
Niche areas within processing equipment can be difficult
to access, inspect, clean and
maintain. Narrow angled spaces
within equipment, lap joints,
seam sections, gaps, dead ends
and more fall under this category.
Also easy to overlook are
uneven ﬂoors or rough equipment surfaces. Wet ﬂoors with
cracks may become collecting
points for the Listeria monocytogenes pathogen, Kheradia says.
"Equipment and tool surfaces that have an uneven texture,
or are pitted or corroded, may
become an ideal niche for bioﬁlm
formation, in which case it may
be difficult to remove surface
pathogens and contaminants
through normal cleaning," he
says.
