Tilapia demand
falls worldwide
Demand for tilapia is
falling worldwide, according to a new study.
The global tilapia
trade fell 6% in the ﬁrst
two quarters of 2017,
driven by increased
demand for other specialty ﬁshes, according
to the report, from Fact
MR. Those alternative
ﬁshes include pangasius, according to
the study.
"A special palate for
pangasius has been witnessed among seafood
consumers worldwide.
Led by Vietnam, nearly
half of the global supply
of pangasius is held
by India, Bangladesh,
Indonesia, Malaysia, and
China. The U.S. and China continue to remain
the largest consumers
of pangasius.
Following the
increasing domestic
demand and lower
prices of pangasius,
Chinese tilapia farmers
are adopting farming
of other ﬁsh varieties
including pangasius.
These dynamics continue to deter the future
growth of the Chinese
tilapia exports in prominent tilapia market.

Traditional supermarkets top other grocery
channels in a number of
areas, including overall
satisfaction, according
to a new study.
On a 5-point scale,
traditional supermarkets scored a 4.31, Aldi
4.27 and Walmart 3.93
in overall satisfaction
in the Lake Success,
New York-based Retail
Feedback Group's 2019
U.S. Supermarket Experience Study.
Supermarkets also
have the highest scores
in quality and variety.
While traditionals
won in the overall ranking, quality and variety,
Aldi garnered the top

score in "value for money spent" and for overall
satisfaction during the
peak traffic hours of 3 to
7 p.m. - 4.3, vs. 4.27 for
supermarkets and 3.98
for Walmart.
Supermarket shoppers rated quality/
freshness of the food
and groceries (4.44),
cleanliness of the store
(4.42) and item variety
and selection (4.38) as
the strongest core experience factors. Associate friendliness, while
the highest service
rating, received a more
moderate score of 4.32,
followed by checkout
speed/efficiency (4.28),
associate helpfulness/
knowledge (4.24) and
the lowest scoring
service area - associate
availability - (4.17).

Trader Joe's again
tops grocery
retailer list
Trader Joe's repeated as
the top-rated grocery
retailer according to
the Retailer Preference
Index from dunnhumby,
a customer data science
ﬁrm in Chicago.
The RPI study
surveyed 7,000 U.S.
households to determine which of the top
56 largest grocer retailers have the strongest
combination of ﬁnancial performance and
consumer emotional
sentiment. The top ﬁve
was rounded out by
Costco, supermarket
newcomer Amazon,
H-E-B and Wegmans.
"Because of pressures
that grocery retailers
are facing today, a common reaction is to think
only of the short term.
But by focusing on the
customer preference
levers that we have
identiﬁed in this RPI to
inform their strategies,
retailers can buy an
insurance policy to ensure they can weather
the storms ahead," says
Jose Gomes, North
American president for
dunnhumby.
The top 12 also
includes Market Basket,
Sam's Club, Sprouts,
WinCo, Walmart, Aldi
and Peapod.
The overall RPI
ranking evaluates
retailer performance
on seven independent
pillars: price, quality,
digital, operations,
convenience, discounts/
rewards and speed.
