Supermarket Perimeter - July 2019 - 6

WIRE
Urban consumers
shop the perimeter,
want delivery
Food retailers looking to
cash in on the growing
demand for delivery
might want to stick to
the city, according to a
new report by Acosta.
As city growth
continues to outpace
that of suburban and
rural areas, delivery and
non-traditional grocery
channels have become
increasingly important
to the growing urban
dwelling demographic.
Convenience is key in
the city, where crowded
stores and long lines are
the norm. Sixty percent
of urban shoppers
reported ordering
groceries online, and
one in four said they
ordered groceries
online at least once a
week. Urban shoppers
were 90% more likely to
rank online capabilities

among their most
important attributes.
Suburban and rural
shoppers, on the other
hand, tended to value
competitive pricing
and high-quality fresh
foods over delivery and
convenience.
Increasing demand
for delivery isn't the
only way urban shoppers are shaking up
the traditional grocery
shopping world. The
report also found they
are less reliant on traditional grocery channels
for key product groups,
including paper products, health and beauty
products, condiments
and frozen foods.

increased demand for
quick and convenient yet
healthy solutions for busy
consumers, according to
Innova. This is creating
opportunities for wholesome, satisfying and sustaining snacks to fulfill the
role of mini meals and play
a more meaningful role in
contributing to refueling
and nutritional needs
throughout the day.
Healthy snacking
choices are seeing the
fastest growth rates overall, with nutritious options
gaining ground, according
to the study. This is led by
vegetable-based snacks,
with an increasingly
high profile for on-trend
ingredients such as more

grains, hummus, avocado,

produce better food has
continued to germinate in the minds of
this key demographic,
resulting in an enduring
trend that has spread to
virtually every corner of
the food and beverage
industry. Data collected
by Packaged Facts highlighted the differences
between the in-store
choices of affluent and
other food shoppers,
concluding that the
future of grocery retail
is better aligned to
meet the expectations
of higher-earning
households than other
consumer segments.
According to
Packaged Facts, affluent
food shoppers increasingly have moved to
organic and natural
foods. They were more
prone than other food
shoppers to shy away
from conventional

shelf-stable packaged
goods and more likely
to spend money buying
and experiencing
higher-margin store
perimeter products and
services. In addition,
they more frequently
avoided foods with
artificial ingredients.
Affluent shoppers had
a much higher likelihood of buying fresh
department products
such as organic produce and value-added
products such as hot
rotisserie chicken or
further prepared fresh
seafood. This means
they provide a disproportionate boost to grocery store profits today.
The report predicted
affluent shoppers will
be even more important
in the future, as stores
continue to shrink the
center store and invest
in the perimeter.
