retiring
Mike Eardley, the
president and CEO of
the Madison, Wis.-based
International Dairy Deli
Bakery Association
(IDDBA), is retiring.
The announcement
was made recently at
IDDBA's annual board
meeting in Rosemont, Ill.
" We are thankful for
Mike's guidance of the
association throughout
his tenure, " said Dotty
Vandermolen of Fresh
Solutions, the board's
immediate past chair.
" His knowledge and
dedication to our
industry enabled IDDBA
to grow our annual
trade show event and
year-round educational
resources. "
The IDDBA Executive
Committee has begun
6 - DECEMBER 2022
will be accepting
letters of interest and
resumes through Dec.
3. Interested parties
should submit these
requirements via email
to Katie Hilbrands at
khilbrands@iddba.org.
The committee will
reach out to finalists
for an interview in
January 2023.
Packaging
equipment
sales up 40%
Sales of packaging
equipment rose 40%
from 2019 to 2022,
according to a new
survey from PMMI.
" It's just unbelievable.
It's a record in our
industry, " said Jorge
Izquierdo, vice president
of market development
for PMMI.
In summarizing the
2022 report on " The
Future of Automation
of Packaging and
Processing, " Izquierdo
also pointed out that
workplace issues,
including widespread
skilled labor shortages,
will fuel a robust need for
packaging equipment in
the near future.
Looking forward, the
market is projected to
expand 7.2% in 2023, 4.9%
in 2024 and to stabilize
around that range going
forward.
In the executive
summary of the report,
PMMI pointed out
that labor shortages
are driving consumer
packaged goods (CPG)
companies to adopt
automated solutions,
although there are
obstacles to overcome.
For example, installing
automated machinery
in unsuitable building
layouts can be a
challenge, as can the
lack of skilled labor to
operate and maintain
sophisticated machinery.
Additionally, CPGs
listed automation of
the production and
processing phase as the
top priority as improvements
in efficiency and
productivity are immediately
visible.
The report also
outlined how the
shortage of skilled labor
on production lines is
becoming a greater
challenge as automated
machinery becomes
more sophisticated.
" CPGs are looking
to OEMs to rise to the
challenge of producing
machines which are
capable of complex operations,
while themselves
being easy to operate and
maintain, " the report said.
" The use of 3D printers to
produce spare parts for
automated equipment
has rapidly become a
reality, and use of this
new but fast-developing

technology is particularly
attractive because it has
a positive impact on the
ROI for machinery as
parts can be produced
more cheaply. Perhaps,
more importantly, it
circumvents supply chain
disruptions and cuts
lead times. "
Whole Foods
forecasts 2023 trends
Plant-based foods,
increased interest in
sustainable foods and
practices, and the return
of popular classics
highlight potential new
trends in 2023, according
to a new report from
Whole Foods Market. The
report is created by the
retailer's Trends Council
of food industry experts.
Whole Foods has high
expectations for some
emerging ingredients,
with yaupon taking its top
spot. As North America's
only native caffeinated
plant, the holly bush
ingredient is becoming
increasingly popular
for its earthy tones
and energy benefits,
particularly in cocktails
and other beverages.
Increased consumption
of milk alternatives is
creating opportunities for
upcycled byproducts in
the baking industry, the
company's No. 2 trend.
Whole Foods expects
to see an increase in
the use of oat, soy and
almond pulp in a variety
of applications, including
alternative flours, mixes
and confectioneries.
Other sustainable
practices also account
for some of 2023's top
trends. In particular, the
company emphasized
growing concerns over
animal welfare in the
production of chicken
and eggs and the importance
of manufacturers
including sustainability
messaging on their labels.
Environmentally
conscious foods ranked
highly in the Whole
Foods' report, with
plant-based pastas
coming in as the No. 3
trend. With increased
demand for plant-based
alternatives broadly,
the company sees an
opportunity for growth
in the pasta category that
has a new generation
of products popping up
on shelves, including
spaghetti squash and
banana-based pastas.
