Earl Wise Sr. Enters Circle of Honor The late Earl Wise Sr., founder of the Wise Potato Chip Co., was inducted into the Snack Food Association’s coveted Circle of Honor during SNAXPO 2011 in Orlando, FL. The award recognizes the achievements of snack food industry executives who have been leaders in their companies and the association. Mr. Wise began what today is a thriving snack food company as a delicatessen operator in Berwick, PA. In 1921, he experimented making extra potatoes into chips, frying them on his mother’s coal-fired stove and selling them in brown paper bags and cans at his deli. Demand outstripped his mom’s kitchen capacity, and the operation was moved to a remodeled garage, using fryers and equipment designed by Mr. Wise and local associates to create chips with a different flavor and darker color than others on the market. The company grew, eventually becoming Wise Foods, the first snack company to use cellophane bags. Early on, Mr. Wise picked an owl logo to represent the company, and Wise Owl road signs were posted all over the East Coast to promote business. In 1944, the year Mr. Wise was chairman of the Potato Chip Institute/Snack Food Association, a fire destroyed the company’s plant. Just two years later, a new plant — triple the size of the original — was opened. Mr. Wise was a generous contributor of time and resources to community affairs and an ardent supporter of the snack food industry. At the time of his death in 1963, he operated one of the largest potato chip companies in the world, with a wide range of other snack products. Today, Wise Foods, Inc. has 900 employees and 2,500 routes, and the ▲ SFA chairman Blake Thompson (center) presents the Circle of Honor company continues to thrive, with award to Mike Scott (left), executive vice-president and CFO, Wise members of the Wise family still working Foods, and Bruce Brown, CEO, Fairchester Snacks, who both accepted there. the award on behalf of the late Earl Wise Sr. 42 Snack World May 2011 www.sfa.org presented March 22 by Sally Lyons Wyatt, senior vice-president, SymphonyIRI Group, who said this year’s data shows that brands are back in favor, as long as the price is right (see Page 13). The opening session on March 21 saw 2010 SFA chairman Blake Thompson, senior vice-president, supply chain, Snyder’s-Lance, Inc., Charlotte, NC, hand over the gavel to Matt Colford, director of marketing, Old Dutch Foods Ltd., Roseville, MN, the new 2011 chairman. Mr. Colford credited Mr. Thompson for helping keep SFA strong and for serving with “passion, commitment and leadership.” He invited new members to bring their ideas and talent to help SFA grow in the future. Also at the opening general assembly, Joseph Levitt, a former top Food and Drug Administration official, advised snack company executives to act now to comply with provisions of the new Food Safety Modernization Act (see Page 12 ). Mr. Levitt is a partner at Hogan Lovells US LLP. Martin J. Hahn, also a partner at that firm, is SFA general counsel. Meanwhile, educational seminars covered sustainability efforts in the industry, front-of-pack labeling, implementing a “continuous improvement” culture, commodity/ ingredient risk management and innovations in ingredients.
