Letter from SFA McCARTHY e are delighted to present the November 2011 issue of Snack World, the Snack Food Association (SFA)’s official quarterly magazine. As you will see in the following pages, the past months have been packed with activity, all directed at representing the interests of members and providing educational and business development opportunities designed to help companies grow, even in these challenging times. Our Total Quality Management (TQM) program at Ohio State University in mid-September provided learning opportunities for management-level personnel charged with ensuring the safety and quality of products produced in their plants. That 5-day event was capped with a terrific tour of the new Shearer’s Foods, Inc. plant in Massillon, OH, the world’s first LEED Platinum-certified snack food manufacturing facility. Our thanks go out to Shearer’s for sharing its insights and experiences with us. Also held in September, the 2011 Executive Leadership Forum at the Four Seasons Resort at Jackson Hole, WY, provided an outstanding venue for executives to network and gain insights from their peers and to hear expert speakers cover the economy and politics, fitness, global intelligence, and management. The setting could not have been better for such an event. Inside this issue is a detailed report with photos from the 2011 Management Development Program held in October at Dearborn, MI. This extremely informative event was capped with a fascinating tour of the recently expanded Better Made Snack Foods, Inc. plant in Detroit. We also thank the folks at Better Made Snack Foods for making this possible. Key issues facing the industry, including acrylamide and complying with the new food safety law, were on the agenda at these meetings. Over the next few months, SFA plans to offer webinars on acrylamide and create a model HACCP plan and “how to” materials for members regarding the food safety law. Looking toward next year, SFA will celebrate its 75th anniversary, an event that would not be possible without the support of our members and sponsors.
