75th Anniversary Navigating the Road Ahead Industry looks toward its future and how private label snacks have attracted consumers looking for quality and value during the first decade of the 21st century. BY BILL LEVY W ith 75 years in the books and many challenges looming in the years ahead, what’s the future for the Snack Food Association and the industry? Where will the industry be 25 years from now when the association celebrates its 100th birthday? Most industry executives responded that in the year 2037, the snack food business will be just fine. “I think there will still be one major player on the scene, but I think that regional snack companies can thrive and survive,” said David Jones, executive vice-president, operations, at Golden Flake Snack Foods, Birmingham, AL. Ed Lambert, chairman of Wise Foods, Berwick, PA, predicted that in another 25 years, the industry will be making products that haven’t even been created yet. “It will be serving different channels that an entrepreneur is just now establishing,” he added. “I don’t know 25 years from now what’s going to change, but bottom line is that people like snacks, so I don’t see that changing,” said Tony Caridis, president, Heat and Control, Hayward, CA. “People are going to be people.” Jim McCarthy, SFA president and CEO, said the challenge to the industry is to continue to develop healthy products. As the celebration of the Snack Food Association’s (SFA) 75th anniversary comes to an end this year, Snack World looks back at its history as well as the future of the industry. In this issue, we examine how private label snacks have grown since the start of the 21st century. We also flash back to the 1980s, when SFA was officially adopted as the association’s name. In a retrospect of the 1990s, we discuss how Borden and Anheuser-Busch tried to challenge Frito-Lay for snack food supremacy only to be out of the industry by the end of the decade.
