Industry Images Back to School Snack School provides knowledge and insight. STORY AND PHOTOS BY BOB GATTY I n-depth discussions and tours highlighted the Snack Food Association (SFA)’s inaugural Snack School Oct. 14-16 in Philadelphia, PA, The event, which was designed for operations as well as sales and marketing personnel, was held in partnership with Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) and led by its Department of Food Marketing. The program evolved from SFA’s previous Management Workshops. Topic discussions included key government issues, leadership, new product development, lean operations and healthy snack trends. “This has been a terrific program,” said Carol Curry, quality supervisor at Better Made Snack Food Co., Detroit, MI. “We are on our way to becoming certified by the Safe Quality Food Institute, and I have found real value here.” Hearing Ronald L. Dufresne, PhD, SJU’s associate professor on managing human capital, inspired Don Cartusciello, director of creative services at Herr Foods, Inc., Nottingham, PA, to opine, “I want to go back to school. Listening to Dr. Ron rekindled that thirst for knowledge; I want to learn more. This was awesome.” Dr. Dufresne presented a detailed discussion on leadership skills — a theme that was recurring throughout the event. “I’m pleased with our first Snack School and SFA expresses its appreciation to Saint Joseph’s University for partnering with us to make this a reality,” said SFA President and CEO Jim McCarthy. “This program was rich with information and insight, and it provided real value for those who participated.” Chip Mann, president, Pretzels, Inc., and SFA vice-chairman, welcomes attendees to Snack School.
